GAME NOTES: The Boston College Eagles attempt to extend their season-long winning streak to five games on Saturday afternoon, as they close out the regular season with a trip to the Carrier Dome to face the Syracuse Orange in an Atlantic Coast Conference bout.

Since starting the season 3-5, Boston College has been one of the hottest teams in the nation with four consecutive wins, most recently taking down Maryland on the road last weekend, 29-26. At 7-4 overall, the Eagles will be heading to a bowl game for the for the first time since 2010.

Meanwhile, Syracuse has gone cold since winning three of four a few weeks back, as it has dropped two in a row against Florida State (59-3) and Pittsburgh (17-16) to fall to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the ACC. The Orange will need to win this contest if they want to become bowl eligible for the third time in the last four seasons.

The Orange have a 28-18 advantage over Boston College in the all-time series, which includes an 18-6 mark in Syracuse.

The Golden Eagles has been rather modest this season, posting 28.2 points and 369.5 yards per game, but it has taken flight at times thanks to a historic season from their running back.

Andre Williams has earned himself some Heisman consideration late in the season by rushing for an astounding 927 yards and six touchdowns over the last three games alone, giving him an FBS-leading 2,073 yards on the year, which is 462 more than second place. He's the first running back to amass 2,000 rushing yards at the FBS level since Donald Brown ran for 2,083 with UConn in 2008, and his rushing yards per game (188.5) would be fourth-best all-time if it stands for the rest of the season.

The presence of Williams in the backfield has certainly taken a lot of pressure off of Chase Rettig, who has completed 61.9 percent of his passes for 1,636 yards with 15 touchdowns to just five interceptions. Rettig has outstanding chemistry with Alex Amidon, who has caught 64 passes for 843 yards and five touchdowns, but he barely targets anyone else. David Dudeck's 11 receptions are the next-highest total on the team.

Defensively, Boston College has not played all that well, as it allows 27.3 points per game and ranks last in the ACC in total defense (413.8 ypg).

Steele Divitto (96 tackles) and Kevin Pierre-Louis (91 tackles, 9.0 TFL, 5.0 sacks) have both racked up the stops. Kasim Edeball is in the midst of an All- ACC-type season at defensive end with 14.0 TFL, 9.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Syracuse's offense has been one of the ACC's worst this year, as it amasses just 21.8 points and 365.7 yards per game, and the unit has been especially bad in recent weeks as it has scored just 19 points in the last two games.

Drew Allen began the season as the starting quarterback, but did not fare well with just two touchdown passes and nine interceptions. Terrel Hunt has since taken over under center full-time, and he has been marginally better by completing nearly 60 percent of his passes for 1,180 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, while also providing a spark with his legs (336 rushing yards, four TDs).

The Orange's rushing attack is their biggest strength, as they pick up more than 192 yards per game. Jerome Smith has 166 carries for 794 yards and 11 touchdowns to lead the way.

The modest receiving corps is paced by the efforts of Ashton Broyid (42 receptions, 364 yards), Jarrod West (21 receptions, 359 yards, TD) and Christopher Clark (31 receptions, 322 yards, three TDs). West is listed as questionable for this matchup with a chest injury.

Syracuse has performed reasonably well on defense, allowing 25.6 points and 369.5 yards per game, although both numbers rank in the bottom half of a stout ACC.

Cameron Lynch, Marquis Spruill and Jay Bromley all have at least 10 TFL, while Bromley has added 9.0 sacks and three forced fumbles to boot. Durrell Eskridge leads the team in both tackles (78) and interceptions (four).

Boston College has picked up momentum when it matters most, with Williams doing most of the heavy lifting. The Orange allow just 133.5 rushing yards per game, but the Eagles' tailback has been on fire and will surely put up another big total to extend his team's winning streak.
