NCAA Game Summary - Southern Miss at Boise State

(Saturday, September 28)

Final Score: Boise State 60, Southern Miss 7

Boise, ID (Sports Network) - Joe Southwick threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns as the Boise State Broncos buried the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 60-7, in non-conference action at Bronco Stadium.

Southwick completed all but four of his 23 pass attempts for the Broncos (3-2) and survived three sacks as the team won for the third time in the last four outings. Seven different players scored touchdowns for Boise State, including Matt Miller who caught five passes for a game-high 107 yards.

The Golden Eagles (0-4), who haven't won a game since December 2011, were led by quarterback Allan Bridgford who hit on 18-of-30 pass attempts for 143 yards and a score, but he was also picked off twice in the lopsided defeat.

Shane Williams-Rhodes got the scoring started with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter when he crossed the goal line on a 10-yard run for the Broncos. Kicker Dan Goodale added a 33-yard field goal early in the second for Boise State to give the hosts a double-digit advantage.

The lone score for Southern Miss came shortly thereafter when Bridgford combined with Marquise Ricard on a five-yard touchdown pass play, but from there the game belonged to the Broncos as they ripped off 50 unanswered points.

The run began with a 42-yard touchdown strike from Southwick to Geraldo Boldewijn, followed by another Southwick TD pass, this one to Williams-Rhodes from 14 yards out. With just over a minute remaining in the first half, Jay Ajayi hit the end zone on a four-yard run, but a failed PAT left the hosts with a 30-7 advantage at the break.

Southwick threw his third TD of the night to Miller, an 18-yard effort with 10:10 remaining in the third frame. Goodale added a 26-yard field goal and backup quarterback Grant Hedrick contributed a two-yard TD run later in the third to make the score 47-7.

A six-yard TD run by Jack Fields and a seven-yard score by Charles Bertoli finished off the night, although Goodale did have a PAT blocked following the final touchdown.

The Broncos, who held USM to just 2-of-13 on third down, generated 545 yards of total offense in the meeting.

The Golden Eagles entered the weekend tied with New Mexico State for the longest losing streak in the nation at 15 in a row. The Aggies bowed to San Diego State on Saturday night, 26-16, which means both teams remained tied for the longest slide heading into the month of October.
