NCAA Game Summary - Utah State at New Mexico

(Saturday, October 19)

Final Score: Utah State 45, New Mexico 10

Albuquerque, NM (SportsNetwork.com) - Joey DeMartino amassed 144 yards and three touchdowns on only 12 carries to propel the Utah State Aggies to a 45-10 rout of the New Mexico Lobos on a Mountain West Conference tilt at University Stadium.

DeMartino also tallied 41 yards and a touchdown on three catches for Utah State (4-4, 3-1 MWC). Darell Garretson also played well as he completed 15- of-23 pass attempts for 144 yards and a touchdown in his first career start. Jaron Bentrude rushed 72 yards for a touchdown on his only carry while Robert Marshall tallied 61 yards on 14 rushes. Travis Reynolds set game-highs with four catches and 42 receiving yards.

Clayton Mitchem, Cole Gautsche and David Vega combined to go 11-of-20 for 140 yards for New Mexico (2-5, 0-3) as it suffered its second consecutive loss and fourth setback in five games. Kasey Carrier contributed 69 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and Jeric Magnant led the Lobos in receiving with 40 yards on two catches.

New Mexico got off to a poor start and never recovered. The Lobos fumbled the ball deep in their own territory on the third play from scrimmage as Mitchem lost control and the Aggies' Connor Williams made a heads up play with a recovery. DeMartino put USU on the scoreboard as he rushed eight yards for a touchdown on the next play.

Garretson made it 14-0 as he completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to DeMartino at the 8:05 mark of the first quarter to conclude a 10-play, 68-yard drive. Nick Diaz sent the Aggies into the second stanza with a 17-0 lead by chipping in a 24-yard field goal try in the closing seconds of the opening period.

New Mexico finally ended the run as Justus Adams converted a 24-yard field goal attempt with just under eight minutes left before halftime. The Aggies quickly responded as DeMartino rushed 42 yards into Lobos territory to set up himself for a 32-yard touchdown run on the following play.

The Lobos lost three yards on their next possession before Bruce Natson returned a punt 65 yards for a score that extended the visitors' lead to 31-3 as the contest progressed into halftime.

DeMartino provided the only score of the third quarter with a 48-yard touchdown run just over one minute after the opening kickoff of the second half.

Bentrude broke away for his long touchdown run with eight minutes left in regulation. Carrier scored on a two-yard touchdown run with 6:21 showing on the clock in the fourth quarter to finalize the score with New Mexico behind, 45-10.

The Aggies held a 492-298 edge in total yards of offense and racked up 337 rushing yards while averaging eight yards per carry. New Mexico went 3-of-15 on third-down conversions. USU has now won 10 straight conference road games dating back to the 2011 season, extending its own school record.
