NCAA Game Summary - Temple at Idaho

(Saturday, September 28)

Final Score: Idaho 26, Temple 24

Moscow, ID (Sports Network) - With both teams searching for their first win of the season, it was the Idaho Vandals who came out on top as they defeated the Temple Owls, 26-24, in non-conference action at the Kibbie Dome.

Idaho (1-4) was led by Chad Chalich, who proved to be a dual-threat with 310 yards and a touchdown through the air to go with 114 yards rushing. Chalich completed 26-of-43 passes while carrying the ball 14 times. His key target was Richard Montgomery, who tallied five catches for 102 yards and a touchdown.

For Temple (0-4), Kenneth Harper carried the ball 11 times for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Connor Reilly was 23-of-47 for 249 yards with a touchdown, while Ryan Alderman had 88 yards and a score on five receptions. Dating back to last season, the Owls have lost five in a row and nine of their last 10.

The Vandals were first to score as Chalich hit Montgomery on a 64-yard touchdown pass less than three minutes in. Temple responded with a 12-play, 73-yard drive, capped off by a 25-yard field goal by Nick Visco.

The second quarter was all Idaho. Montgomery had a five-yard touchdown run and Austin Rehkow kicked a 39-yard field goal to give the Vandals a 17-3 lead at halftime.

The Owls scored their first touchdown of the game early in the third quarter when Harper ran one in from five yards out. Rehkow then kicked a pair of field goals (30, 38) to increase the Vandals' lead to 23-10.

Reilly found Alderman for a 51-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth to cut the Owls' deficit to just one score, but Idaho again made it a two-possession game when Rehkow made a 25-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter.

Harper plunged in for a two-yard touchdown run to cap off a 10-play, 75-yard drive late in the fourth to make the score 26-24. With 3:32 remaining in the game, Temple decided not to go for the onside kick. The Owls' defense was able to stop the Vandals but only after Idaho ran three minutes and 22 seconds off the clock. With just 10 seconds remaining, Temple was unable to complete its second-half comeback.

Temple struggled on third down, going just 4-of-16. The Vandals were able to convert on 8-of-18 third down attempts.
