NCAA Game Summary - Colorado State at Tulsa

(Saturday, September 7)

Final Score: Tulsa 30, Colorado State 27

Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - Carl Salazar connected on two field goals in the fourth quarter including the game-winning 34-yard effort as time expired to lift the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to a 30-27 comeback victory over the Colorado State Rams at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

Salazar went 3-of-3 on field goal attempts in the game after missing both tries a week ago against Bowling Green. Trey Watts rushed for 152 yards on 22 carries, including an important 45-yard scamper during the game-winning drive for Tulsa (1-1). Watts also added a team-high eight receptions for 58 yards. Cody Green completed 21-of-39 pass attempts for 212 yards and three touchdowns but was also intercepted once. Derek Patterson caught three passes for 61 yards and a score.

The Golden Hurricanes did suffer a loss though as wide receiver Keyarris Garrett had to be taken off the field in an ambulance after suffering a severe leg injury during the final drive.

Chris Nwoke led Colorado State (0-2) with 97 yards on 22 carries while Kapri Bibbs had 83 yards on nine attempts. Garrett Grayson completed just 12-of-29 pass attempts for 114 yards and two scores to match two interceptions. Jordon Vaden had three receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown.

The scoring opened up when Grayson hooked up with Joe McKay on a two-yard touchdown pass less than five minutes into the contest. After the score the Rams held an early 7-0 lead.

Tulsa would tie the score at 7-7 midway through the first quarter with a 17- yard touchdown pass from Green to Ja'Terian Douglas.

A five-yard touchdown reception by Jordan James off a pass from Green, less than four minutes later, put Tulsa out in front, 14-7.

Jared Roberts connected on a 25-yard field goal attempt early in the second quarter to cut the Rams' deficit to 14-10.

Colorado State would then take the lead less than two minutes later when Grayson threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Vaden.

The Rams added to their lead with a 44-yard field goal from Roberts.

After failing to score in the second quarter when the Rams put up 13 unanswered points, Tulsa finally got on the scoreboard again with a 31-yard field goal from Salazar early in the third period.

Colorado State gained some breathing room before the start of the fourth quarter with a one-yard touchdown run from Nwoke near the end of the third frame.

Salazar's second field goal of the game, this one a 23-yard effort, brought Tulsa to within a touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

The Golden Hurricanes would then pull even with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Green to Patterson.

After forcing a punt from Colorado State, Tulsa took over at their own 26-yard line with 1:24 to play. The Golden Hurricanes drove the ball 57 yards, the bulk of which came on the 45-yard run by Watts, to set up the potential game-winning field goal from Salazar. After the Rams used all three of their timeouts, Salazar stepped up and nailed the 34-yard game-winner.
