NCAA Game Summary - Toledo at Ball State

(Saturday, September 28)

Final Score: Ball State 31, Toledo 24

Muncie, IN (Sports Network) - Jahwan Edwards scored three rushing touchdowns as the Ball State Cardinals held on for a 31-24 victory over the Toledo Rockets in a Mid-American Conference battle at Scheumann Stadium.

Edwards finished with 89 yards on 20 carries for Ball State (4-1, 2-0 MAC) as it picked up its second win in a row. Keith Wenning completed 27-of-38 pass attempts for 335 yards. Willie Snead reeled in seven catches for 131 yards. Jamill Smith also made a big impact in the passing game with 11 receptions for 99 yards. Brian Jones recorded a season-high of 13 total tackles to pace the defense in the win.

For Toledo (2-3, 1-1), Terrance Owens went 34-of-46 for 274 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Alonzo Russell made nine catches for 147 yards while Bernard Reedy hauled in 13 receptions for 37 yards. David Fluellen surpassed the century mark on the ground for the fourth consecutive game as he tallied 129 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries.

The Cardinals took an early lead as Edwards concluded their eight-play, 75- yard opening drive with a two-yard touchdown run.

Toledo put its first points on the board with 2:29 remaining in the first quarter as Jeremiah Detmer connected on a 44-yard field goal try. The Rockets' defense gave them their first lead as Jayrone Elliot sacked Wenning, causing a fumble that Junior Sylvestre returned 23 yards for six points.

Wenning bounced back on the following drive. After a defensive pass interference call moved BSU to its own 40-yard line, the senior quarterback connected with Snead on a 55-yard pass play that gave the hosts a first-and- goal. The Cardinals were forced to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Scott Secor that tied the score at 10 with just seconds remaining in the first frame.

Ball State's defense forced a Rockets' three-and-out on the next possession and its offense marched down the field before Edwards dashed 14 yards across the goal line for his second touchdown of the contest at the 11:33 mark of the second quarter. Neither side managed to produce any more points in the first half which sent BSU into the intermission with a 17-10 lead.

After both sides were held scoreless for the entire third quarter, Toledo tied the score at 17 in the opening seconds of the final frame as Owens completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Russell. The Cardinals quickly answered as Wenning scored on a seven-yard run.

The Rockets were stopped on fourth down on their next drive. However, Ross Madison intercepted Wenning to give them the ball back at BSU's 34-yard line. Toledo took advantage of the short field and Fluellen rushed one-yard for a score to tie the score at 24 with 6:20 remaining in regulation.

BSU answered once again as it produced an eight-play, 71-yard drive that concluded with a four-yard touchdown rush by Edwards. The Rockets took over with just over three minutes showing on the clock and picked up a pair of first downs. After just crossing midfield, they were stopped on fourth down, which allowed the Cardinals to run out the clock.

Penalties ended up being the difference as Toledo was flagged 10 times for 97 yards. BSU was penalized just once for 10 yards. The all-time series between these schools is now tied, 19-19-1.
