NCAA Game Summary - Florida Atlantic at South Florida

(Saturday, September 14)

Final Score: Florida Atlantic 28, South Florida 10

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Jonathan Wallace and Jaquez Johnson each rushed for touchdowns and Florida Atlantic scored twice on defense as the Owls topped the South Florida Bulls, 28-10, at Raymond James Stadium.

Johnson completed 10-of-17 pass attempts for 98 yards and also rushed for 55 yards for FAU (1-2), though he was intercepted once. Wallace added 65 yards on 13 carries while Daniel McKinney hauled in six passes for 42 yards. The Owls had just 228 yards of total offense and 13 first downs.

Marcus Shaw piled up 159 yards on 22 carries but failed to score for USF (0-3), which remains winless in its first year under Willie Taggart. Bobby Eveld started at quarterback but, after fumbling on the Bulls' second possession, was benched. Steven Bench took over but completed just 8-of-23 pass attempts for 129 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

It wasn't a strong start for USF. On the first play of the Bulls' second drive of the contest, Eveld bumped into Shaw and fumbled while dropping back to pass. Cory Henry scooped up the ball for FAU and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown.

A 44-yard rush from Shaw keyed the Bulls' first scoring drive, which ended in a 50-yard field goal from Marvin Kloss. Bench took over under center for Eveld to begin the drive.

On the Owls' ensuing possession, DeDe Lattimore picked off a pass from Johnson. The turnover set up a 25-yard touchdown pass from Bench to Ryan Eppes.

Florida Atlantic pulled ahead, 14-10, just before the half on a four-yard touchdown run from Johnson. The Bulls did not score in the 35 seconds after Johnson's touchdown and went into the break trailing 14-10.

After halftime the Owls were the first to score as Wallace tallied a one-yard rushing touchdown with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The Owls really put the game out of reach when D'Joun Smith intercepted a Bench pass and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown.
