NCAA Game Summary - Purdue at Cincinnati

(Saturday, August 31)

Final Score: Cincinnati 42, Purdue 7

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Cincinnati scored 35 unanswered points between the second and fourth quarters as the Bearcats crushed the Purdue Boilermakers, 42-7, in the 2013 opener for both schools at Nippert Stadium.

Quarterback Munchie Legaux accounted for two touchdowns for the Bearcats (1-0), one through the air and the other on the ground. The signal-caller converted 13-of-20 pass attempts for 145 yards and was intercepted twice in the triumph.

The Boilermakers (0-1) were paced by Rob Henry who connected on 18-of-35 through the air for 161 yards, but he too was picked off two times.

Following a scoreless first quarter, the Bearcats registered the first points of the afternoon in the second frame when Legaux reached the end zone on a 10- yard run.

Purdue countered later in the period when Henry tied the contest with a seven- yard TD run of his own.

The hosts went into the break with a 14-7 edge thanks to a 15-yard scoring strike from Legaux to Blake Annen.

The Bearcats continued to pile on in the third quarter with back-to-back TDs, the first coming on a three-yard run by Ralph David Abernathy IV, the other a 41-yard interception return by Adrian Witty to make the score 28-7.

Cincinnati struck again to begin the fourth quarter, with Hosey Williams racing 30 yards to the end zone. The hosts finished off Purdue with a one-yard TD run by Tion Green, capping a six-play, 79-yard drive.

The Boilermakers finished the day with a mere 226 yards of total offense, just 65 yards on the ground.

Purdue, which finished 6-7 a year ago, has now been outscored by a combined 100-21 in the last two games, the previous outing being a 58-14 blowout loss versus Oklahoma State in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Jan. 1.

Both programs featured new head coaches as Darrell Hazell made his debut for the Boilermakers and Tommy Tuberville began his tenure with Cincinnati. Hazell previously coached Kent State where he was named the 2012 MAC Coach of the Year as he led the Golden Flashes to a school-record 11 victories, while Tuberville spent the last three years at Texas Tech.
