NCAA Game Summary - Western Michigan at Purdue

(Saturday, August 30)

Final Score: Purdue 43, Western Michigan 34

Purdue, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Danny Etling threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Purdue Boilermakers captured a 43-34 win over the Western Michigan Broncos in non-conference play at Ross-Ade Stadium.

Etling converted half of his 38 pass attempts for 181 yards, while Raheem Mostert accounted for a team-best 146 yards and a score on 22 rushing attempts for the Boilermakers (1-0).

The Broncos (0-1) were led by running back Jarvion Franklin who carried the ball 19 times for a game-high 163 yards and three scores. Quarterback Zach Terrell hit on 18-of-36 for 205 yards and two scores and one interception.

The teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter as Etling tossed an 11-yard scoring strike to Justin Sinz to begin the contest, followed by a five-yard run by Franklin for the Broncos.

Purdue again pulled ahead in the second frame thanks to a 35-yard field goal by Paul Griggs, the kicker adding a 51-yard effort later in the period, but in between Franklin raced 61 yards to the end zone to give WMU a 14-13 advantage.

Etling responded for the hosts as he crossed the goal line from four yards out, putting the Boilermakers back on top by a score of 20-14. A 44-yard field goal by Griggs pushed the lead to nine points at the break.

Less than five minutes into the third quarter a 26-yard TD run by Franklin cut the deficit to just two points at 23-21.

Purdue then scored back-to-back touchdowns in a span of lass than five minutes as Mostert found the end zone on an 11-yard run and Etling hit Gabe Holmes with an eight-yard scoring strike to make the score 37-21.

Refusing to go away quietly, WMU also scored consecutive touchdowns thanks to a seven-yard TD pass from Terrell to Kendrick Roberts late in the third and a 14-yard toss to Corey Davis at the 8:11 mark of the fourth, although kicker Andrew Haldeman failed on the PAT, leaving the Broncos with a three-point deficit.

The Boilermakers gave themselves some breathing room thanks to a 38-yard touchdown run by Akeem Hunt, but Griggs missed his PAT as well, leaving Purdue with the nine-point victory.

Purdue finished with 407 yards of total offense, a significant increase over the 282.9 ypg the team averaged last season when it ranked 119th in the country. On the ground, the Boilermakers produced 226 yards on 39 attempts, a far cry from the 67.1 ypg that had the program ranked 122nd nationally in 2013.

The win for the Boilermakers was their first since defeating Indiana State, 20-14, on Sept. 7, 2013 -- snapping a 10-game losing streak in the process. The victory was also the first for the program over another school from the Football Bowl Subdivision since taking down Indiana (56-35) for the Old Oaken Bucket on Nov. 11, 2012.
