NCAA Game Summary - Western Michigan at Massachusetts

(Saturday, October 26)

Final Score: Western Michigan 31, Massachusetts 30

Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - A bold, failed two-point conversion attempt from the Massachusetts Minutemen allowed the Western Michigan Broncos to escape with a narrow 31-30 victory in a Mid-American Conference clash at Gillette Stadium.

Zach Terrell, starting his second straight game at quarterback, completed 23- of-36 pass attempts and threw for 275 yards and four touchdowns leading Western Michigan (1-8, 1-4 MAC) to its first win of the season. Corey Davis, the team's leader in receptions, yards and touchdowns, turned in another solid performance with 154 yards and two touchdowns on 10 catches. Brian Fields (18 carries, 65 yards) and Dareyon Chance (13 carries, 51 yards) supplemented the Broncos' assault.

A.J. Doyle went 15-for-24, throwing for 194 yards and a touchdown, but couldn't connect on the short pass for a late two-point conversion that would have secured a Massachusetts (1-7, 1-3 MAC) win. Rob Blanchflower caught seven passes for 131 yards and a touchdown and Lorenzo Woodley added 58 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

UMass' Khary Bailey-Smith returned the game's opening kickoff for a dazzling 90-yard touchdown as the Minutemen broke out to a 7-0 lead.

Andrew Haldeman got the Broncos on the scoreboard with a 36-yard field goal with 6:05 remaining in the first quarter.

UMass extended its lead to 11 after a three-yard, rushing score from Jamal Wilson just under two minutes into the second quarter.

WMU responded less than three minutes later with a touchdown of its own on a 31-yard pass to Antoin Scriven from Terrell.

Blanchflower brought in a six-yard touchdown from Doyle midway through the quarter, giving UMass a 21-10 lead.

The Broncos responded with 2:13 before the end of the first half with a five- yard pass from Terrell to Kendrick Roberts.

Opening the second-half scoring, Davis caught a 14-yard pass from Terrell to give WMU its first lead of the afternoon, 24-21.

With 6:36 left in the third quarter, UMass would tie the game at 24-24 with a 37-yard Blake Lucas field goal, his lone tally on three attempts in the game.

Davis hauled in his second touchdown of the day, a 54-yard pass from Terrell with just under five minutes left to play.

With time winding down, UMass drove the length of the field from their own 32, scoring on a two-yard touchdown run from Woodley with 22 seconds remaining. In a shocking decision, the Minutemen rolled the dice and went for a two-point conversion and the win, but the pass attempt from Doyle missed his intended receiver.

Western Michigan recovered the UMass onside kick and ran out the rest of the game clock, escaping with the win.
