NCAA Game Summary - Central Michigan at Western Michigan

(Saturday, November 16)

Final Score: Central Michigan 27, Western Michigan 22

Kalamazoo, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Zurlon Tipton ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns, as the Central Michigan Chippewas out-lasted the Western Michigan Broncos, 27-22, in a Mid-American Conference tussle at Waldo Stadium.

Titus Davis caught nine passes for 122 yards for the Chippewas (4-6, 3-3 MAC), who are trying to match last year's team that was also 3-6 at one point before finishing with three straight wins to earn a bowl bid. Quarterback Cooper Rush was intercepted three times, two of which came on consecutive passes early in the third quarter and led to 10 points for Western Michigan.

Dareyon Chance carried 14 times for 93 yards and a score for the Broncos (1-10, 1-6), who have lost eight of their last nine conference games. Zach Terrell completed just 14-of-35 passes for 147 yards and a pick-six the other way.

Central Michigan marched right down the field on the game's opening drive, which Tipton finished off with a 10-yard touchdown run.

Tipton scored again on a one-yard run at the 5:22 mark of the first quarter to stake CMU a 14-0 advantage.

Western Michigan's Andrew Haldeman kicked a pair of second-quarter field goals (24, 33 yards) to send the Broncos into the locker room trailing at the half, 14-6.

WMU's defense created an opportunity on the Chippewas' first series of the second half when Travonte Boles intercepted Rush at the Central Michigan 18. On the very next play, Chance rumbled into the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown run to make it a one-point game.

On first down of the next series, Rush was intercepted again, this time near midfield by Demetrius Pettway, who returned it to the CMU 28. Haldeman capitalized on that takeaway with a 21-yard field goal to put the Broncos on top, 16-14.

However, CMU answered with two straight touchdowns to regain the lead. Rush threw a three-yard TD pass to Mike Kinville at the 1:25 mark of the third quarter, although Ron Coluzzi's PAT was blocked.

The Chippewas defense came up big on the first play of the ensuing possession, as Tony Annese stepped in front of a Terrell pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown to make it a 27-16 game.

WMU would not go quietly, however, as Austin Lewis scooped up a loose ball at the CMU 19-yard line early in the second quarter after teammate Cory Sueing jarred it loose on a tackle. Two plays later, Brian Fields scored on a one- yard run to cut the deficit to 27-22. The Broncos went for two but were unable to convert.

The WMU defense came up with another takeaway on the next series when Rush was intercepted for the third time on the day, this time by Justin Currie just across midfield. But the Broncos came up empty on their ensuing offensive possession, as Haldeman missed a 32-yard field goal attempt. They got the ball back once more but eventually turned it over on downs after an unsuccessful 12-play drive.

All told, Western Michigan's defense forced five turnovers and allowed only 285 total yards. However, the offense managed only one touchdown out of five trips inside the red zone.
