Bill Hancock might hold the most unpopular job in sports today. The former NCAA executive was named the first permanent executive director of the Bowl Championship Series in November. It's Hancock's job to defend the current system that determines a national champion in college football.
The same system writers, talking heads, radio hosts and fans love to hate.
Hancock joined 620 The Buzz Wednesday morning, telling Adam Gold and Joe Ovies the BCS is the best way to determine a national champion.
"If someone could come up with a plan that meets all the criteria, the schools would go for it," Hancock said. "But so far they haven't heard anything better than the BCS for matching No. 1 and No. 2 in a bowl game."
Apparently a four-team playoff, or "plus one," is not considered a good enough plan. Hancock believes moving to such a format would only cause the field grow to an unruly amount of teams in the future.
"You can not deny history, and even the BCS has grown. It started off with 8 teams, and now it's up to 10."
And what about House lawmakers that are prepared to vote on a bill aimed at forcing a college football playoff? Hancock feels the possible vote has frightening repercussions.
"The contracts are in place for the next four years, and if Congress says, 'Tear up your contracts' to all of us in this country, I think we've got a big problem."
I don't know how many of you heard this interview on the radio, but this guy in effect called everybody who disagreed with this tastic system an idiot. I believe the exact quote was "I think most people who disagree with the system just don't understand it." No wonder they need to hire PR firms.- Posted by jodymane
I guess I'm in the minority here on this, 1 out of a million I guess, but I like the BCS. I'm fine each year with the teams that play for the national championship. If anyone can say that Florida and Oklahoma were not the best 2 teams last year, I'd love to hear it. Same a few years back with Texas and USC. I'm not in favor of a playoff, because I don't think it automatically could determine who the best team is. If you have an 8 team playoff, and the 8th seed wins, does that mean they are the best? It would be the same as if a lower seed in the NCAA BB tournament won it all, like 10 or 11. Doesn't mean they are the best, just means they got hot at once. George Mason a few years back made the final four and beat good teams, but I still wouldn't have considered them one of the 4 best teams in the field of 64. I would say just make every team a BCS school, and who ever finishes in the top 2, plays for the National championship, no matter what conference they are from. At least people could stop arguing that the smaller schools never get to play. If every school is a BCS school, they all have the same chance of playing. I just don't see why congress and Obummer need to be involved in this, when there are more important issues that need to be resolved. It's just football.- Posted by cruelpenguin
