Garrard's pro potential spotted early

Well sports fans, yesterday my cell phone began to ring over and over. I was getting requests from all around the state for comments on David Garrard's apparent retirement. As of this writing, I have not talked with Dave as I am sure he is going through a checkout procedure with the Jets and arranging travel plans. So, having said that, I will give everyone a few thoughts about this special young man.

I first encountered David in my summer football camp when he was a rising junior at Southern Durham High School. As everyone who follows high school football here in the state knows, Southern Durham has traditionally played second fiddle to Northern Durham on the football field. I had seen David on film and he was receiving some interest from recruiters regionally, but there was considerable discussion along the lines of "can this guy be a quarterback at the collegiate level?" The reason for this question was because David did not "look" like a quarterback. When we met that day in camp we weighed him in at somewhere around 250 pounds. Now remember, this was somewhere around 1994, well before any jumbo sized quarterbacks had taken center stage.

His high school films were almost comical in that physically it truly was a man among boys. No one could tackle him. It would routinely take three or more defenders to get him on the ground. Consequently, Southern Durham began to win some football games. David was what coaches call "country strong". He had not lost all

A look behind the scenes at the NFL Draft

Apr 24, 2013

Almost every year I ever coached, which was somewhere around 40 years, someone would invariably walk up to me and ask, "Coach, what do you do in the offseason?"

I coached three years of junior high football, two years of high school football, two years of junior college football, way too many years of Division 1 football, three years of NFL Europe football and three years in the National Football League. Since it is NFL Draft time lets take a look at what the coaches do in the 'offseason.'

NFL coaches go to work around July 25th and work 7 days a week, 80 to 90 hours a week until roughly January 7th of the following year. It is an incredible grind. You will be given a week off to catch your breath and then the 'offseason' begins.

Immediately upon your return to the office you will be presented with a list of prospects at your respective position that need to be graded, reports written, and then all of these prospects ranked, from first to last. My last year with the Tampa Bay Bucs I was the running backs coach and it was my job to evaluate close to 100 running backs from all around the country. So your day begins around 7 a.m. alone in your office and you begin watching tape. Keep in mind you will need to look at a minimum of 7 to 8 tapes of each player before you can truly get a read on the skill set of the young man you are looking at. Do the math, 8 tapes times 100 running backs. Welcome to the twilight zone.

The entire month of February will be

Logan: Dealing with the unpredictable

Feb 4, 2013

How do you handle the unpredictable on the biggest stage? Coach Steve Logan said that when the lights go out, that’s just one more thing that tests championship teams.

“I used to cherish and value preemptive information to give to my team,” Logan said. “You coach all around in circles to prepare emotionally, your team, to handle those adverse situations.”

Logan said that on Sunday, Colin Kaepernick appeared to be a deer caught in the headlights and the San Francisco game plan did not help the untested starter ease into the big-game atmosphere.

“That was a lot of stuff. It was real slow, there wasn’t a lot of rhythm,” Logan said. “The 49ers, I think, were in a little bit of a technical overload.”

Blues on steroids and the NFL playoffs

Jan 21, 2013

The coach, Steve Logan, was welcomed Monday morning to some “Blues on steroids,” inspiring him to take an afternoon nap, but first he dropped some insights into the conference championship games that led to a Ravens-49ers Super Bowl.

Joining Mark and Mike on 620 The Buzz for his weekly segment, Logan said the first thing he does when “attempting to comment on a game,” is “tear the game apart with the statistics.”

“You are looking at turnover ratios, how they rank, run, pass, blah, blah, blah,” Logan said. “Those things, somehow, they are telling you what’s going to happen.”

Steve Logan

Steve Logan explained a little bit of his one-of-a-kind personality Monday when joining Mark and Mike on 620 The Buzz, as he does every Monday from 7-8 a.m.

“The accumulation of leisure time was always my No. 1 goal. Even when I was working,” Logan said. “I hate work. I hated work; I hated school. The only thing I wanted from school was out. I’d go in, take care of what was necessary, and then I’d want to play.”
