Whoa, what a jolt Wednesday was as Virginia Tech won at Wake Forest.
The Hokies’ stunning victory was a reminder that the ACC is deeper, and stronger, than in recent years in men's basketball.
ACC coaches were howling last year after only four league teams – North Carolina, Duke, Miami and Clemson - made the NCAA Tournament.
That won’t happen this year. The league has four teams that will contend for high seeds, with UNC, Duke and Clemson being joined at the top by Wake Forest.
But the teams down the standings are stronger. The Sagarin ratings have Duke No. 1, Carolina No. 2, Wake No. 5 and Clemson No. 7. But also in the top 65 are Miami (24), Florida State (45), Maryland (50), Virginia Tech (61) and Boston College (65).
N.C. State (86), Virginia (98) and Georgia Tech (132) are pulling up the rear but have had their competitive moments in what has been a fascinating year for the league so far.
