Why have the Duke Blue Devils risen to the top ranking in college basketball? Gerald Henderson. The junior has brought his game to a level that all Dukies were anticipating upon his arrival in Krzyzewskiville, and the team is reaping the rewards. Henderson is using his athleticism to give the Devils a dynamic that has been missing for a few years, and with his ability to defend any player on the floor, has become Duke’s most versatile weapon.
Since conference play started Henderson has become a beast…averaging 19.4 points per game, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.6 steals. All of those totals are significantly higher than last season for Henderson. If Henderson keeps this up, the Blue Devils might have a long season ahead of them, and that is something that has been missing in Durham too.
It should also be known that after a 41 point pummeling, the Maryland Terrapins are the team that lost to Morgan State, not a tournament team. If your team can’t get up for duke, Gary Williams you are in trouble.
NC State’s loss to Boston College will have Wolfpack faithful shaking their heads, but for BC it was a must win. The NCAA tournament might like that win over UNC, but losses at home to Harvard and NC State and BC would have been looking at the NIT. Tyrese Rice is making a strong case for not being just the best guard in the ACC but the best player. For NC State look no further to the team’s results as to what Brandon Costner brings to the game, all the talent but rarely the results. Costner was 2-6 from the floor and scored six points, State can’t win if that is all he does.
