The Maryland Terrapins are a shell of the basketball program that once looked like it was on the brink of being among the ACC’s elite. But Terps athletics director Debbie Yow is insisting Gary Williams’ job is secure.

"I really want to lay to rest these crazy rumors that are floating around related to the job security of Coach Williams. He has my full support, as he does from the department and from the university,” Yow, the sister of Kay Yow, told reporters Monday.

"He and I communicate regularly, and a couple of things he's communicated to me are pretty important. One of these is he's very optimistic about the future, and he's very focused about recruiting. He's after it with as much enthusiasm and passion as I've seen in my 15 years here."

Williams is clearly going to need to hit the recruiting trail with a vengeance. This is a team that needed overtime to beat Vermont and lost to Morgan State.

What’s stunning about this is Williams looked poised to challenge Duke and North Carolina as perennial ACC powers only a few years ago. The Terps won the 2002 NCAA title and opened the swank Comcast Center in the fall of 2002.

But Maryland has made the NCAA Tournament just once in the past four years. This team could be Williams’ weakest since the lean years of the early 1990s.
