The North Carolina football program is about to go recruiting again – this time for assistant coaches.
UNC has lost two assistant football coaches, and most intriguing is linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen going to Auburn. The new defensive coordinator at Auburn is former Duke head coach Ted Roof.
Roof landed at the University of Minnesota after being fired at Duke and had an immediate impact, which attracted the interest of Auburn. And UNC tight ends coach Steve Hagen is also leaving to be an assistant with the Cleveland Browns.
“I appreciate everything Tommy Thigpen and Steve Hagen did to help build our program at North Carolina,” UNC coach Butch Davis said in a statement. “Both Tommy and Steve made the decision to leave based on what was in the best interest of their families and professional careers. I wish them well in their new positions.
“As I’ve said before, our assistant coaches will become increasingly more attractive to other programs as we continue to have success. Moving forward, we will bring in outstanding coaches who are excellent teachers and recruiters and who will continue the growth of our program. This is a tremendous opportunity to add to an already outstanding staff.”
