If Jackson retires, will Lakers Call Coach K?
Jun 18, 2009
Remember the summer of 2004? You know when the Los Angeles Lakers pursued Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and he thought long and hard about it, but passed on the opportunity?
Since that time, Coach K and Kobe Bryant have helped Team USA get back atop the basketball world winning gold last summer. So it should come as no surprise that if Phil Jackson retires, Krzyzewski' s name will surface as the first choice to replace the Zen Master.
This was in today's Racine Journal Times from Gery Woelfel's column Wednesday, The Woelfel World of Sports, just a short blurb in a lot of quick hits around the NBA.
* At least one well-informed NBA informant insists that Lakers coach Phil Jackson will hang up the clipboard this summer and his successor could be Duke's Mike Krzyzewski -- especially if his highly-influential agent (Kobe Bryant) puts the heat on Lakers management.
Woelfel, who covers the Milwaukee Bucks and NBA for the Racine Journal Times, will be on The Insiders Wednesday afternoon in the 4 p.m. hour talking about this story.

And the reason I said Sidney may be higher on their list is because Sid has NBA head coaching experience.RE: If Jackson retires, will Lakers Call Coach K?

K's office will alert the media, then K will head to the coast to consider. Then, after everyone at Duke and in the press works themselves into a lather, and after he gets a sweetened package or new facilities from the school, he will announce he is staying. Just my prediction. I don't know why I think that'll be the case.- Posted by Chatham Adam
Why would they offer it to Roy? K has shown he can coach thse prima donna pro basketball players. Roy has only shown that he can coach college players. I doubt Roy is even on their list. Sidney Lowe may even be higher on their list than Roy!
So tell us, TBR, why did the Lakers offer the job to Roy five years ago?
Because K turned them down?
Actually, I didn't know they offered the job to Roy... but if you read my comment, I wasn't slamming on Roy anyway. Or saying K was better than Roy. I actually think Roy is a better college coach than K. But he hasn't ever coached NBA players, and that's a completely different can of nuts from college coaching.
