Game blog: Georgia Tech edges North Carolina 62-58
Mar 11, 2010
9:05 p.m., Officially over: Georgia Tech takes the in bounds and that's it. Game over. Tech wins 62-58.
9:02 p.m., Big free throws: Heels tied up Moe Miller but luckily the possession arrow was pointed to G.T., then the Heels had to foul. Iman Shumpert than hit one free throw to get a four point lead. Larry Drew had a three ball go in and out at the other end. After a scrum and an out of bounds ball the Heels had one more chance.
But Will Graves throws up an air ball. This game is over. Well, at 16-16 I do think the Heels should get an NIT berth because it will draw a rating.
8:59 p.m., Good D: Heels played solid defense after Ginyard hit both free throws. They had the trap set up once Tech crossed half-court, but the Jackets called a timeout to save themselves from trouble. Tech has the ball with a 61-58 lead and 36 seconds to play in the game.
8:56 p.m., Ehh, a turnover: Right after Lawal hit a shot to put his team up four Larry Drew turned it over and Bell got fouled going to the hoop. He made one free throw.
Will Graves missed a three to cut it to three points. It looked like it was down. But Georgia Tech fouls away from the basket and puts Ginyard on the line with 47 seconds left.
It's 61-56 before the free throws.
8:54 p.m., Down to the wire: Great game. Tech leads by two in the final two minutes. 58-56. Tyler Zeller has a double-double.
8:35 p.m., Still tied: Tech just turned the ball over trying to get the ball inside. Derrick Favors and Tyler Zeller are leading both of their teams in scoring and rebounding with just under eight minutes to play in the game.
It's 52-52.
8:24 p.m., Zeller keeps the Heels going: He's got 13 points and eight rebounds in this one. North Carolina is also crushing the Jackets on the boards. You'd think with all Georgia Tech's size, and the desire to go to the NCAAs would be enough to keep someone as skinny as John Henson off the glass.
It's 49-49 with under 12 minutes to play in the game.
8:19 p.m., Tech wins the first four minutes: Gani Lawal and Mr. Iman Shumpert showed up to play in the early goings. Shumpert hit a big three-pointer and had a sick behind-the-back pass to Lawal for an easy two. Glen Rice Jr. hit a three pointer that briefly gave the Jackets a lead.
Carolina maintains a 40-39 advantage with under 16 minutes to play in the game.
7:57 p.m., Zeller and Thompson leading the Heels: Tyler Zeller scored 9 points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench. Deon Thompson scored six points and notched five boards. If anything the Tar Heels are playing hard, and deserve to be in the lead. Derrick Favors leads the Yellow Jackets with eight points.
7:52 p.m., Nice half for Carolina: The Heels lead the battle of the two most disappointing teams in the ACC. Roy's boys are up 34-24 at the break. I'll get you some halftime stats coming up here in just a minute.
And seriously, Georgia Tech is is just gross. How can they be in this spot with all that talent? Just play better! If they lose this and don't get in the NCAAs it could be it for Paul Hewitt.
7:47 p.m., Sorry folks!: The Internet is something awful here at the Greensboro Coliseum. I've been trying to get reconnected for the middle part of the first half. In the meantime the Heels have looked really good. They are playing aggressive. Tyler Zeller and Deon Thompson have been strong inside. There have been a lot of missed shots from close range, but they are fighting inside. It's paying off early.
Carolina leads it 33-24 just before halftime.
7:24 p.m., Just throw it off the rim: Not saying I don't like the around the rim play, but I don't think we've even had a made basket outside of the paint. We've had a lot of nice dishes for lay-ups down low, and a lot of three-point play attempts.
Georgia Tech is up 13-11 with 11 minutes left in the first half.
7:07 p.m., Ginyard looks to score: The very first possession Marcus Ginyard took it strong to the hole for a bucket. The next trip down he didn't hesitate to fire a jumper. He missed the jumper, but this early in the game it's nice to see him look aggressive.
Derrick Favors got some work done inside with two straight buckets. He got fouled on one too. Georgia Tech has the early lead 9-5 with 15:14 left to go in the first.
These Georgia Tech band geeks sitting behind me got onto Larry Drew II when he was at the foul line. "Larry?!!!? Is that your name??" they yelled (probably coming from a kid named Ned). Yeah because no good basketball players have ever been named Larry. Bird, Johnson.......morons.
What I didn't like about Larry is how he just took off on a fast break chance and then pulled up and air-balled a three. That was gross.
6:47 p.m., Lowest seed ever for UNC: Amazing isn't it? This is the lowest seed ever for North Carolina in an ACC Tournament. Even that year in 2002 when Matt Doherty had the Heels at 8-20 overall, they still had the seventh seed (and there were only nine teams in the ACC). It makes you appreciate how great Dean Smith was, not like you needed any more reasons. From 1964 to 1997 Dean never had the Heels finishing worse than third place in the ACC.
It's almost game time here in Greensboro. I'd say there are about 12,000 fans in here right now. I expect it to fill up a little more. This massive place seats almost 23,000.
6:11 p.m., Roy's last stand: Here we go folks. I am still sitting back here in the workroom at Greensboro Coliseum, deep in the anals of the arena. I'm trying to get my mind right just like the players are right now. North Carolina has one last chance to go out and grab a couple of wins and at least shore up a slot in the NIT.
If they lose here in the first round to Tech that would put the Heels at 16-16 for the season. Would the NIT even want that? The Coliseum should be buzzing here tonight though because State will play right after the Carolina game. Both the local teams are here in the second session. That might have hurt the crowd in the early games. That and the teams playing weren't very good in the regular season at all.
Georgia Tech owned North Carolina in the regular season. The Jackets survived a Will Graves-fueled comeback in Chapel Hill to win 73-71, and they stomped the Heels from start to finish in Atlanta.
You could probably peg this game as featuring the two most disappointing teams in the conference. It's a disgrace that Paul Hewitt's team went 7-9 in the ACC with Gani Lawal, Derrick Favors, Zack Peacock and Iman Shumpert. And we're all shocked that the Heels are in this position. You may have believed that UNC would have a down year, but come on. We were thinking 20-10 or something like that.

What sets me off, is we finally had a rhythm going with Zeller and Henson in the game, and Roy ignores it to give BabySoft Thompson and NoTalent Wear Bro#2 some minutes.- Posted by Dubble EE
Probably because he knows the starters can't play the entire 40 minutes? And if they did, and won, they wouldn't have anything left for the next game?
You have to substitute in order to rest your players. This is exactly why so many Carolina fans think Duke won't go far. They don't sub very much and rest their main players enough. Well, when Roy does it, you act like he's an idiot.

- Posted by Dubble EESorry, Dubble EE, but I just don't see how any coach with his resume can, all of a sudden, coach like one of the dumbest coaches in basketball history. I used to hear fans say the same thing when Dean coached and UNC lost. Roy Williams, much to my dismay, is a great coach.- Posted by tommybrownnc
Well, hey.........that's you. We do not agree on this point. Suck up to him all you want.
A good coach knows how to make adjustments when needed. Roy does not. He is great when his players are better than anyone else.
This is just my opinion, but he never addressed the lack of an inside game all season, until tonight. Then, when we had one, he moved away from it. Dumb.........
really? who was carolinas inside game until tonight? Zeller finally came to play, he`s played just as weak as thompson since he`s been back from missing 10 games.
henson been playing strong last few games, but didnt bring it tonight, every pump fake turned to a foul on him. thompsons been weak all year, ginyard is a joke, graves is a joke unless he gets wide open set shots. wears will be fine. we have no point guards, so tell us oh great one, what inside game did he address tonight that they havent had all year?
