Final LSU 30, UNC 24: UNC has several chances in the endzone but can't get the touchdown. LSU was tired, but Pianalto dropped two in the final seconds in the endzone for the possible win.

1:00 in the fourth: Quan Sturdivant takes the ball and regains possession for the Heels. They have one more chance...

1:37 in the fourth: Yates fumbles the ball on fourth down, LSU recovers. Every glimmer of hope for Carolina fans just flew out the door. Yates had a great game overall though, definitely proved himself tonight.

2:31 in the fourth: UNC attempts the onside kick, UNC gets possession. The defense has done it's job, special teams is redeeming themselves and UNC could comeback with two timeouts and plenty of clock.

2:38 in the fourth: Yates has a great step up and connects with Erik Highsmith for a touchdown. Yates managed that 13 play, 67 yard drive very well. LSU 30, UNC 24

7:57 in the fourth: UNC's defense comes up big for the Heels again as they force LSU to punt.

10:34 in the fourth: First UNC highlight in awhile, T.J. Yates lets a long ball go and Jheranie Boyd takes it to the endzone for longest play from scrimmage in Carolina history. The PAT is good and Carolina has something to cheer about. The defense has been doing everything they can to keep UNC in the game. It's up to the offense. LSU 30, UNC 17

End of the third: No score for either side, a lot of back and forth. UNC may have dug themselves too deep of a hole with the mistakes and injuries. The lack of experience is apparent.

Add Anthony Elzy to the list of the injured. He's headed to the sideline to chat with a trainer. LB Hunter Furr in for Elzy, that's 5th string.

9:30 left in the third: Neither side getting much going so far. LSU's punter Josh Jasper put UNC in a tough spot, making them start their drive on the one yard line. The Tar Heels are putting together a steady drive, not making any big plays but moving the ball on the ground.

Second half underway in Atlanta, it wasn't the prettiest football throughout the first half and several UNC players are feeling it. Johnny White is sidelined with an ankle injury but may return. Mywan Jackson is out for night with a concussion.

Halftime: UNC's halftime offensive stats: 11-19, 138 passing yards/12 rushing yards (on 18 attempts). 2-9 on 3rd down. LSU 30, UNC 10

2:28 left in the second: Rueben Randall catches one from Jordan Jefferson for a LSU touchdown. Halftime can't come soon enough for the Heels, they need to take some time to regroup. LSU 30, UNC 10

4:00 left in the second: UNC's possession didn't last long, and neither did LSU's six point lead. LSU's Patrick Peterson goes 86-yards for a punt return. LSU 23, UNC 10

6:00 left in the second: Bruce Carter picks up an LSU fumble near midfield. UNC gets the ball on their own 46.

7:14 left in the second: Safety. UNC's quarterback Yates wasn't even calling for the snap and he gets it anyways. LSU 16, UNC 10

8:06 left in the second: Russell Shepard breaks away and rushes for 50 yards for a touchdown. UNC lead doesn't last long, Josh Jasper extra is good. LSU 14, UNC 10

9:15 left in the second: T.J. Yates finds Jheranie Boyd for a 75-yard pass and run play over the middle. Ramsey drops a wide open pass from Yates on 2nd and goal, the Heels can't convert on 3rd down and settle for a field goal from Casey Barth. UNC 10, LSU 7

14:12 left in the second: Yates takes a big hit after scrambling for the first down, LSU charged with a 10 yard personal foul. Yates regains composure and finds Devon Ramsay for a 9-yard touchdown. Casey Barth extra is good and the Heels tie it up. UNC 7, LSU 7

End of the first: The UNC offense seems to be settling into a rhythm as they are moving the ball down the field.

5 left in the first: UNC changes it up at center as Cam Holland replaces Cooper after two miscommunications on the center exchange in previous drives. Heels moving the ball better down the field. Johnny White looks to be Yates' go to. Heels are forced to kick but LSU gets called for roughing the kicker for the Tar Heels first break of the game.

6:30 left in the first: Welcome Bruce Carter to the game! He lays a huge hit on LSU's Shepard. Sturdivant and Carter enter the game for the first time on the 3rd series

7:50 left in the first: UNC's offense looks shaky, their count has to be a little off. The line recovers a close fumble, Yates gets sacked for a huge loss and the Heels are three and out.

8:57 left in the first: 3rd and goal, Russell Shepard scores on a 7 yard pass from Jordan Jefferson. Quinton Copples (Marvin Austin's back-up) makes an impressive tackle during the drive but LSU easily ran down the field. LSU 7, UNC 0

13:00 left in the first: T.J. Yates finds Zach Pianalto on the Heels' second possession of the game. The good doesn't last long though, Carolina fumbles on the snap. Yates didn't even have a chance to save that, LSU again gets possession off a turnover.

13:36 left in the first: LSU's 44 yard field goal attempt is not good. Mark this as a big accomplishment for the Heels after the early turnover.

UNC's Johnny White fumbles on his first carry of the game. LSU takes possession.

LSU won the toss and deferred, Carolina's offense will take the field first. T.J. Yates, Ryan Taylor, Alan Pelc and Kevin Reddick were the Tar Heel captains.

The UNC football team will be tested in their season opener against LSU Saturday at the Georgia Dome. The team will have to come together despite not being able to put their best players on the field due to the NCAA and school investigations into agent relations and academics. The Heels are without 8 starters, 13 players total, as they take the field in Atlanta.

Sorry, but I'd prefer a big win over a cupcake than a loss to a good team, even if it was a moral victory. A loss is a loss is a loss. State has a tough schedule this year. I don't mind us finally playing an easy team to open the season while we gel and continue improving. Because in the end, this is just a loss. Carolina may grow from it, but it still hurts. And I don't think they care much for moral victories at this point.

I will take a last second loss using the second string to a SEC School over a 30 point blowout win against a 1AA team.

Just goes to show there is a moron in every crowd!

Not denigrating any other team, just saying you don't get better by playing teams that you should beat anyway, you get better by scheduling tougher teams. Problem with the Heels in the past was they would schedule easy and not really build.

Sturdivant should not have been in the game. Cleared by the NCAA okay but what about that drug charge? Even though it was dismissed Butch should have at least gave a punishment. Butch could learn a few things from TOB who did actually sit his players out that were charged this summer.

Not all of UNC was second string....LSU just sucked tonight as well. Good job for Yates though. He's usually good for a couple of games a season.

Maybe Butch could learn from TOB, and you could learn about verb tenses from any Carolina student.

or Butch's tutor? Just joking. Sorry my verbs were not proper. I am tired from an exhausting day at Carter Finley.
