Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. — Sandhills Community College captured the NJCAA Division III national championship Saturday night becoming the first North Carolina school to accomplish the feat and end a run of six consecutive titles won by Texas schools.
The Flyers (30-6) defeated Cedar Valley Community College of Dallas County, Texas in the championship, 101-86, at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, New York.
Sandhills, who just reinstated their athletic programs four years ago, led the NJCAA in scoring for the year. They needed a buzzer-beater and an overtime to win each of their first two games of the tournament and advance to an eventual final.
Daquain Towns, a Pinecrest High School graduate, earned Tournament MVP honors after scoring 18 points in the championship and sinking the buzzer-beater in the opener.
Sandhills is coached by Mike Apple who is in his first season after coming over from Pinecrest and taking over for athletic director Aaron Denton. Denton coached the Flyers the past three seasons.
