Wake Forest names Randolph Childress director of player development

— Wake Forest has named former Demon Deacon All-American Randolph Childress as the Director of Player Development for the men’s basketball program, as announced by head coach Jeff Bzdelik on Wednesday.

Childress will join the basketball staff full-time after serving in an administrative role within the athletic department since August. Childress, who retired from professional basketball in 2011, was previously Assistant to the Athletic Director with roles in compliance, fundraising and student-athlete mentorship.

“My family and I are excited about this opportunity,” said Childress. “I love Wake Forest, and to have a chance to work with the basketball program on a daily basis is a dream come true. I look forward to helping build a program that Wake Forest fans and the Wake Forest community can be proud of. I’m ready to go to work.”

Childress played an off-the-court mentorship role with the basketball student-athletes last season and will see those duties increase as he joins the staff full-time.

“We are looking forward to Randolph playing a more prominent role in our program,” said Bzdelik. “He exemplifies our vision of winning championships without compromising our values. I, along with all Demon Deacon fans, am excited to have him on board.”

During his collegiate playing career, Childress spent five seasons with the Wake Forest basketball program from 1990-95. He earned All-American honors as a junior in 1994 and again as a senior in 1995. He earned ACC Tournament MVP honors in 1995 after leading the Deacons to their first conference title in 33 years.

This past season, Childress was honored as an ACC Tournament Legend during the conference tournament in Atlanta.

Childress is the school’s all-time leader in 3-point field goals and ranks fifth in ACC history with 329 3-points field goals made. His 2,208 career points ranks second in Wake Forest history. Childress’ No. 22 jersey is one of 10 numbers retired by the basketball program.

The Clinton, Md., native played professionally for 16 seasons, including two seasons in the NBA with the Portland Trailblazers and the Detroit Pistons, who drafted Childress with the 19th overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft.

In addition to Childress’ hiring, Bzdelik has also moved Mike Lepore to the Director of Scouting/Recruiting and Dan Ficke to the Special Assistant to the Head Coach/Director of Player Relations.

Lepore, a 2009 Wake Forest grad entering his fourth season on staff, previously served as the Team Videographer. Ficke, entering his third season with the Deacons, was the Assistant Coordinator of Operations.

    Wow - sounds like a great move by WF. Childress should inspire the players, and he'll bring some much needed excitement.

    I watched Childress play many times at WF. He will enhance this program. Give him(some) years of experience and he could become the Head Coach up there. The University, and the entire area loves him. I grew up not 30 minutes from Wake.

    Basically, isn't "player development" the job of the coaches? This is just a dodge around the NCAA limit of three paid assistant coaches.
