Michael Felton went 4-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI and Matt Sergey tossed seven strong innings to lead Campbell past Radford 6-3 in Friday’s series opener. Campbell scored five runs off Radford starter Eddie Butler in the fifth inning that proved to be the decisive frame.

Sergey got off to a quick start for the Fighting Camels, retiring the first nine batters he faced during the first time through the lineup. RU scored an unearned run in the fourth inning, using two hits and an error to score a run on a sacrifice fly.

Campbell responded with a strong five-run fifth inning. Brent Graham opened the frame with a strikeout, but reached first base on a wild pitch. After he was sacrificed to second by Jimmy Brenneman, Ben McQuown singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Felton, Jake Kirkland, David Olson and Nick Ray provided four consecutive RBI singles to open up the game, and a RBI groundout from Ben Fish gave CU a 5-1 lead.

Sergey scattered five hits over seven-plus innings of work for Campbell, striking out five Highlander batters while walking three. He walked the only batter he faced in the eighth inning, and when Josh Gardiner came around to score Sergey was credited with three runs (two earned).

Brenneman legged out a triple, his team-leading fourth of the season, in the eighth inning and came to the plate on a sacrifice fly from McQuown to extend the Camel lead back out to three runs.

Ryan Mattes allowed one hit in two innings of relief and struck out three batters, two of which came in a perfect ninth inning as Mattes picked up his seventh save of the season, tying him for third on the CU single season record charts.

The two teams will meet Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader to conclude the series. Game 1 is set to get underway at 2 p.m. and the second game will follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
