The University of North Carolina is no longer in the running at the 2012 ACC Baseball Tournament thanks to Miami’s 6-3 win over Wake Forest Friday night, but the Tar Heels can still play spoiler when they meet North Carolina State University in the final game of pool play Saturday evening at 7 p.m.

Freshman ace Carlos Rodon (9-0), a Holly Springs native who won ACC Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors last week, will be on the mound for the third-seeded Wolfpack as they look to advance to their second championship game in the last three years.

Rodon struck out seven Tar Heels in 6 2/3 innings on March 25, earning a no decision in a 4-3 North Carolina win.

If NC State wins Saturday, the Wolfpack would join Miami at 2-1 in pool play and advance on a tie-breaker because of its win over Miami on the opening day.

If North Carolina wins, the second-seeded Tar Heels and Miami would both be 2-1 in pool play and Miami would advance to the title game because of its 5-3 victory over UNC Thursday. The Tar Heels will be without suspended head coach Mike Fox, who was ejected at the end of North Carolina’s loss to Miami for arguing balls and strikes.

North Carolina took two of three games against NC State when the rivals met in late March.

Saturday’s matchup will be televised on RSN and streamed on ESPN3.

Georgia Tech finishes perfect in Pool A

Eighth-seeded Georgia Tech downed Clemson 5-1 in Saturday's first game to finish Pool A play 3-0 and advance to its 11th ACC Baseball Championship.

Jake Davies went six innings and gave up just two hits to secure the win for the Yellow Jackets. He also drove in two runs with a first-inning home run to right field.

After barely making the tournament field, Georgia Tech opened play Wednesday with a 5-4 win over top-seeded Florida State. After a day off, the Yellow Jackets pounded out a 17-5 mercy-rule victory over fourth-seeded Virginia.

With Saturday's win, Georgia Tech moved to 35-24 on the season.

RE: Wolfpack will advance to title game with win

NC State has had a great year from football, basketball, and now baseball. I was impressed with football and they kept winning to reach a Bowl game. The basketball team, and the job that the players and coaches did was totally impressive. I'm not much of a baseball guy, but these guys are doing what it takes to reach the goal.(s)

The Swoff cannot be too pleased with ^^this headline^^.

"We'll see about THAT", he says to himself before picking up his cell phone, and making a clandestine call to the league officiating office.*

(* Not an actual event; just occurs in the minds of the Gingham Goon/ABC crowd.)

Nope, probably not made up at all. Its so believable that he really could have made such a call, just as in the ACC tournament. How else could anyone explain so many botched calls going unc's way at the end of the game.
