Looks like you were right. Who woudda thunk (you being right)...
May 26, 2012
Greensboro, N.C. — The University of North Carolina is no longer in the running at the 2012 ACC Baseball Tournament thanks to Miami’s 6-3 win over Wake Forest Friday night, but the Tar Heels can still play spoiler when they meet North Carolina State University in the final game of pool play Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
Freshman ace Carlos Rodon (9-0), a Holly Springs native who won ACC Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors last week, will be on the mound for the third-seeded Wolfpack as they look to advance to their second championship game in the last three years.
Rodon struck out seven Tar Heels in 6 2/3 innings on March 25, earning a no decision in a 4-3 North Carolina win.
If NC State wins Saturday, the Wolfpack would join Miami at 2-1 in pool play and advance on a tie-breaker because of its win over Miami on the opening day.
If North Carolina wins, the second-seeded Tar Heels and Miami would both be 2-1 in pool play and Miami would advance to the title game because of its 5-3 victory over UNC Thursday. The Tar Heels will be without suspended head coach Mike Fox, who was ejected at the end of North Carolina’s loss to Miami for arguing balls and strikes.
North Carolina took two of three games against NC State when the rivals met in late March.
Saturday’s matchup will be televised on RSN and streamed on ESPN3.
Georgia Tech finishes perfect in Pool A
Eighth-seeded Georgia Tech downed Clemson 5-1 in Saturday's first game to finish Pool A play 3-0 and advance to its 11th ACC Baseball Championship.
Jake Davies went six innings and gave up just two hits to secure the win for the Yellow Jackets. He also drove in two runs with a first-inning home run to right field.
After barely making the tournament field, Georgia Tech opened play Wednesday with a 5-4 win over top-seeded Florida State. After a day off, the Yellow Jackets pounded out a 17-5 mercy-rule victory over fourth-seeded Virginia.
With Saturday's win, Georgia Tech moved to 35-24 on the season.
