Colon's gem halts Mudcats' slide

Zebulon, N.C. — Joe Colon did not allow a base runner to second over seven scoreless innings and the Carolina Mudcats provided plenty of offense in an 8-2 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Thursday night at Five County Stadum.
The win snaps a five-game losing skid for the Mudcats (30-29, 52-77). The Hillcats (29-29, 65-62) saw their season-long, eight-game winning streak halted.
Colon (4-3) scattered four hits over his seven innings. He whiffed five batters without allowing a walk.
Ryan Hinson (3-3) took the loss after surrendering four runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings. The right-hander walked four and struck out four.
Ryan Battaglia opened the scoring in the second inning when he drove a two-out double into the left field corner to score Bryson Myles from second.
In the fifth, Joey Wendle and Paddy Matera recorded back-to-back singles to bring in a pair and Erik Gonzalez drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Wendle for a 4-0 lead.
The Mudcats continued to pull away in the sixth. Jordan Smith lined a triple to the wall in right-center, and scored when a sharp grounder by Wendle glanced off the shortstop Elmer Reyes’s shoulder into center for a hit.
Matera worked a walk off reliever Wilson Rivera to put two on for Bryson Myles. Carolina’s left fielder drilled a single into left and Wendle scored when catcher Cory Brownsten could not handle the relay from Josh Elander. Rivera grabbed the loose ball and attempted to throw out Myles at second. His throw sailed into center, allowing Matera to score and Myles to third on the error.
Todd Hankins made it 8-0 in the seventh on a double off the wall below the left field scoreboard.
Lynchburg scored twice in the ninth on singles by Trent Moses and Matt Weaver for the final margin.
Carolina finishes their series with the Lynchburg Hillcats on Friday night at 7:15 p.m. It is the final Fireworks Friday of 2013. Fireworks Fridays are presented by the Carolina Ford Dealers.
