Duke escapes upset, edges BC 62-61

Posted February 10, 2013

FINAL: Duke 62, Boston College 61

Duke trailed for much of the game but avoided an upset in Chestnut Hill Sunday, beating Boston College 62-61.

2:15 2nd: BC 59, Duke 56

Turnovers continue to plague Duke and Boston College has a three-point lead at the final media timeout.

The Eagles are being led by freshman Olivier Hanlan who has 18 points, four rebounds and two steals.

7:35 2nd: Duke 50, BC 47

Boston College is playing physical and keeping the Duke offense in check as the game is just three points at the under-8 timeout.

Seth Curry and Mason Plumlee are each in double digits. Rasheed Sulaimon has not seen many minutes in the second half in favor of Josh Hairston.

11:57 2nd: Duke 43, BC 38

Mason Plumlee has begun to assert himself after a quiet first half and Seth Curry is up to 15 points as Duke has opened up a five-point lead on Boston College.

14:48 2nd: Duke 35, BC 34

Duke came out of intermission and promptly led by three points, but BC responded and the Devils' lead sits at one at the first media timeout of the second half.

Seth Curry connected on a three on one of Duke's first possessions out of break for the first long-range bucket by a Blue Devils starter.

HALFTIME: Duke 27, Boston College 27

Duke played one of their poorer halves of the season but go to the half tied with Boston College at 27.

Duke had nine turnovers and was just 1-for-7 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes.

3:10 1st: BC 21, Duke 18

Duke went over four minutes without a field goal and fell behind by seven points at Boston College. A couple interior buckets have trimmed the margin to three at 21-18.

7:25 1st: BC 17, Duke 11

Duke is just 5-for-13 from the floor and no player has scored more than one basket as the Eagles continue to lead 17-11 at the under-8 timeout.

11:27 1st: BC 9, Duke 5

The slow start for Duke continues as they are just 2-for-8 from the floor but three BC turnovers have kept the game close at 9-5 at the under-12 timeout.

15:17 1st: BC 4, Duke 0

Duke is 0-for-5 from the field to start the game and Coach k will go to the bench to bring in Murphy, Thornton and Hairston when play resumes after the first media timeout.

20:00 1st: Duke at Boston Colege

Reports are that weather in the northeast will affect the crowd in Chestnut Hill. Duke starters are Quinn Cook, Rasheed Sulaimon, Seth Curry, Amile Jefferson and Mason Plumlee.

Pregame

With a possible return to the number one ranking on the line, the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils head to Conte Forum for an Atlantic Coast Conference bout against the Boston College Eagles.

Florida and both Big Ten powers Michigan and Indiana sustained losses this week, making Duke one of the prime candidates to become the top ranked squad in the nation once again.
Duke conveniently has a matchup against a team is has dominated for this crucial game. The Blue Devils own a 14-2 all-time series lead over Boston College. This is the first meeting of the season as Boston College will visit Cameron Indoor Stadium on Feb. 24.

Since being blasted by Miami in a 90-63 loss, Duke has reeled off four consecutive victories with the most recent coming at home after it finished off a 98-85 win over NC State. The victory improved Mike Krzyzewski's squad to 20-2 overall, but it still enters Sunday trailing Miami for first place in the ACC by 2.5 games. Duke's inside-outside combo of Mason Plumlee and Seth Curry has fueled its stellar season. Plumlee is posting 18.2 points and 10.7 boards per game in his first season as the featured player in Coach K's system, while Curry is netting 16.7 ppg with 42.3 percent efficiency from 3-point range.

Both players were very effective against NC State. Plumlee totaled a game-high 30 points to go along with nine rebounds, while Curry pumped in 26 points. Quinn Cook added 21 points and four assists to help the Blue Devils avenge the 84-76 loss they suffered to the Wolfpack in Raleigh on Jan. 12. Duke shot an overwhelming 53.8 percent from the floor, including 10-of-24 from beyond the arc, while adding 32 additional points at the charity stripe in the contest. The stellar offensive outing is customary for the Blue Devils, who are leading the ACC with 79.0 ppg, outscoring the opposition by an average of 14.6 ppg.

Steve Donahue's Eagles are just a half-game ahead of the last place Virginia Tech Hokies entering Sunday's action after sustaining losses in seven of nine games since conference play began. Boston College was downed by 22 points on the road on Tuesday when they visited the undefeated Miami Hurricanes in Coral Gables. Sophomore forward Ryan Anderson, who paces the unit with 16.0 points and 8.8 boards per tilt, was able to register a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds in the setback.

Olivier Hanlan went 8-of-14 from the floor for a team-high 16 points as the team shot a collective 37 percent overall against the Hurricanes. Defensively, Boston College allowed Miami to shoot 47.4 percent from the field including 11- of-22 from beyond the arc. The Eagles had previously lost to the ACC leaders by just a single point at home. Hanlan is the second leading scorer for the team with 13.8 ppg and freshman guard Joe Rahon runs the offense to deal out 3.6 assists per contest.

Boston College has potential with a roster filled with young players registering plenty of minutes this season, but its youth has also hurt it against the top tier teams. Duke is playing at a very high level right now and the struggling Eagles will not be able to matchup inside or out with Coach K's elite program.

The ACCT is going to be fantastic this year! I have no idea who will win since the best teams have struggled against the worst teams on the road.

Actually, I read that is why K plays so many neutral court games early (to the dismay of the anti-Duke crowd)...Those away games, while exciting, and certainly favorable to the home team, do not simulate tournament games..

wife asks me why is coach k always on the court with the refs? she notices every game and asks why all the other coaches are not allowed to say anything. I calmly told her that the other coaches have more respect for themselves than the leader of men does and that the refs wouldn't listen to them anyway. she says " NO WONDER HE HAS 900 WINS"!
