Duke lands Rice transfer Obi

Posted April 21, 2014

Duke Blue Devils Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski looks on during a game against the Mercer Bears during the second round of the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at PNC Arena on March 21, 2014 in Raleigh, NC. The Mercer Bears defeated the Duke Blue Devils 78-71. (Lance King/WRAL contributor)

— Former Rice forward Sean Obi announced on various social media outlets Monday that he will transfer to Duke.

The 6-foot-9 power forward from Nigeria posted Tweet, linking to an image of the Duke logo on Instagram saying, "Happy to officially announce that I will be attending Duke university for the rest of my college basketball career. Very thankful for all the support and love from my family and friends all over, and also to every college Coach that have called and been in involved with me through out this process. Duke it is!! #Dukebasketball #DukeNation # Bleedblue #Dukeblueplanet.”

Obi, who averaged 11.4 points and 9.3 rebounds at Rice last year will have to sit out a season due to NCAA transfer rules and will be eligible to play in 2015-16. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Obi led Conference USA in rebounding a year ago as a freshman and posted 11 double-doubles. As a senior in high school, he led Green Farms Academy to a 26-2 record and a New England Prep School Athletic Council tournament win.

In the front court for 2014-15, Duke will lose forwards Rodney Hood and Jabari Parker to the NBA Draft as well as senior big man Josh Hairston, who played sparingly a year ago. The Blue Devils will gain the highly-touted high school senior Jahlil Okafor for next year, but it is unlikely he will stay with the program after one season.

I heard on the DG show today that academics were very important to him, and he wasn't highly recruited, so he went to Rice. He did have a terrific freshman year, and when his coach was fired, he decided to transfer. I think the academic reputation of Duke is what attracted him. He looks like he'll make an immediate impact as soon as he plays; too bad he has to sit out a year.

Based upon recent trends at Duke, this guy could possibly turn into a NONE and done.

The entire concept of a student-athlete has turned into a joke anyway. It just took a bit longer for reality to arrive in Durham.

What went with the Duke tradition/policy of not accepting transfers?

Joe Obies is salivating at the thought of him being at Duke.

Agree, it is interesting. Either he went unnoticed in HS or vastly exceeded expectations in his 1st year at Rice. My guess is the latter. Seth Curry was unranked (RSCI) coming out of high school, but Duke saw what he could do while at Liberty and was convinced. Seems to be a similar story here. A few recruiting analysts liken him to a top 25 recruit today.

It's interesting that he was a two star recruit coming out of high school. That's probably how he would up at Rice in the first place.
