Duke players reunite at K Academy

Posted May 28, 2014

Each year Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski holds a basketball fantasy camp that draws from all over the world.

While the campers at K Academy come to get a taste of life inside the Duke basketball bubble, former Duke players keep coming back for the very same reason.

“The best part about it is seeing players you haven’t seen in a while,” said former Duke forward Kyle Singler, “kind of reconnecting relationships and friendships.”

Call it a basketball reunion, one that cuts across generations. A Duke basketball family with Krzyzewski as its patriarch.

“I love it when I can see Singler and then you see [Mark] Alarie, then you see the three Plumlees walk in. Then you start saying ‘yeah I’m a pretty lucky guy to have all that’,” said Krzyzewski.

And that keeps bringing these former players back year after year to the place where, in so many ways, it all began.

“You know that’s one of the reasons why I chose here, what they talked about how everybody sticks with each other and everybody’s a family. It proves now that everybody comes back and says hi to each other so that’s pretty neat,” said former Duke guard Austin Rivers.

“Not only seeing the guys that I played with, that were kind of around my age, but another great thing for us is we don’t usually get exposed to a lot of the older guys in the program. So spending time with them and hearing kind of the same similar stories and hearing coach K stories,” said former Duke forward Brian Zoubek.

“I’ve two of my first players, you know, [Gene] Banks and [Kenny] Dennard. That is like the biggest upset that 34 years later we would be friends,” joked Krzyzewski.

Ol' Roy wanted to copy coach K's camp with one with his players coming back but unfortunately the prison system won't parole them for it.
