Duke's Chelsea Gray to miss remainder of season

Duke University head coach Joanne P. McCallie announced Tuesday that junior point guard Chelsea Gray will miss the rest of the 2012-13 campaign due to a right knee cap dislocation.

Gray was injured in the first half of Duke's win over Wake Forest Sunday. The injury requires surgery to repair. No timetable has been set for her return.

Gray had started 60 straight games for the Blue Devils, including all 25 contests this season for fifth-ranked Duke.

Gray, an All-America selection as a sophomore, was averaging 13.1 points, 5.6 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 3.7 steals prior to the injury on Sunday. She was leading the ACC in assists and steals, while ranking in the top 10 nationally as well.

The 5 foot 11 guard was having one of the best all-around seasons in Duke history and was presented with a souvenir ball prior to Sunday’s game for reaching the 1,000-point plateau against Maryland on Feb. 11.

The Blue Devils (24-1, 14-0 ACC) will next host 19th-ranked Florida State on Friday, Feb. 22 at 7:00 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Tough break. I thought that she would be done for the year with that injury. Luckily she will be taken care of by great doctors, so she should be back to near full strength. Unfortunately, this kind of injury weakens the area, and makes it a bit more susceptible to re-injury.

Certainly a cornerstone of this team. Not sure what that means for the rest of this season. I don't see us going very far in post season play without her.

Liston stepped up big time after she went down with a career high, 29. And they were in the middle of a dogfight against Wake playing without any fear in Cameron. I think the ceiling for this team was Elite 8 with her, not sure what will happen now without her.

Tough break for such an outstanding person. This team will sorely miss Chelsea but I suspect Chelsea will miss her team even more! Gonna be tough to fill those shoes but, great teams with great coaches find a way to win. Wishing you the best in your recovery Chelsea.

Much to her credit, P refused to make any excuses, and said Duke will continue to play tough with the players they have, and those players will have to step up. Hate to see this for Ms. Gray - she is a real fighter, and she'll have the determination to come back strong next season.
