I think alot of you are forgetting. Two of Duke's key players were nursing injuries much of the year. Add to that that they got out of the MSU postgame press conferences Saturday at 1am and then turned around to play Lville at 5pm less than 2 days later, it wasn't likely they were going to get any practice or film time to prepare a defense that they didn't play the entire season. And even if he did get desperate and called for the team to play a zone, there's no guarantee that would've worked anyway. Lville's loaded with shooters, even Dieng was nailing 20 footers.

Coaches often employ a 2-1-2 zone to limit dribble-penetration. You give up some perimeter jump-shot pressure, but it is a strategy worth implementing in spurts...especially if you've scouted the opposition, identify their tendencies, and prepare a head of time.

Some would call this basic coaching Xs and Os...other would have difficulty connecting-the-dots.

Again, this whole "outcoached" notion seems stretched. I mean, what exactly was Coach K supposed to do? Make his players faster at half time? Increase their quickness during a timeout? They got beat off the dribble by more athletic guards, it's been Duke's achilles heel all year long, this isn't news to Duke fans who have been following the team. The only way we had a chance in that game is if we had quicker, more athletic guards.

Louisville was definitely the better team...that Siva dude could not be stopped at all...

But...just because you are the best coach in college basketball does not mean that you can't be outcoached in a game.

Admit it..Pitino got the better of K...you'll feel better.

I.E., kiwi did not properly prepare his team (again).

[and dream...do remember that it is futile to attempt to have a discussion with jr that requires any connecting of the dots]

I thought Pitino had a great gameplan, but its the same one he had been using all season. To insinuate Duke wasn't aware they were going to press the whole game or play tough man to man defense the entire game is ridiculous. In a case like this, it wasn't really in the cards for K to make any adjusments.

And who recruited and developed those players? Look, I was pulling for Duke, wanted them to win and I think K is a great coach but I think that saying the game really didn't come down to coaching is just a cop out. At least blame the refs, injuries, Swofford or something.

You can't teach speed, quickness, leaping ability, agility. These are abilities that a coach isn't going to give you. Simply put, Louisville had better athletes. Was Rick Pitino a factor? Yes, but the game came down to players vs. players.

  • Dreamchaser Apr 1, 2013

There is where you discredited the coaching.
Who recruited the players? The coach. Who mentored the players? The coach. Who helped those players develop their skills? The coach. Who is in charge of making adjustments during the game? The coach.

Where did I discredit the coaching aspect? I just simply said Louisville had better players, which is true.

At no point did I say coaching had nothing to do with Lousville winning.

Then K had nothing to do with those 4 NC's. Duke just happened to be the better team.

That's a lot of typing just to confirm that the team put under the stress of competing against better Xs and Os...

usually unravels in the second half (as it did).

  • thatrollslayer Apr 1, 2013
    Sports Legend

When your team doesn't match up AT ALL against the other team well, it really doesn't come down to coaching. You can't TEACH speed and agility (overall athleticism,) which is what Louisville had loads more of than Duke in that game

  • randypate1024 Apr 1, 2013
    Towel Boy

You can x and o all you want but at some point it comes down to the "jimmies and joes" and NOBODY this year has a backcourt like Louisville. Duke nor UNC or anyone else in the current ACC could have shut down that duo yesterday. The adjustments K tried to make would likely have worked in most situations but the Louisville guards were so quick and pressed hard that Duke was being forced to start their offense at the time line hash mark. That is simply execution on their part and lack of it on Duke's part. Now combine that with Louisville's domination of the glass and Duke's inability to hit a shot and you've got a team that lives to fastbreak out front with blazing speed and can finish. I have to agree with Bilas in that effect on the team being put under the stress of the press wears down a team and the results will usually show in the second half as it did.

  • kato_karma.v5 Apr 1, 2013

Analysts agree that kiwi was simply out coached by Pitino...

Pitino made the key adjustment by moving the screens up the floor, essentially the checkmate in the coaching game.

    another...

Pitino had a game plan to take away Seth Curry and Ryan Kelly...tweaked their offense to make it harder for Plumlee and Kelly to defend the pick-and-roll...tweaked it again after halftime to open up more space for speedy guards Russ Smith and Peyton Siva.

    Another...

On defense, they used a complicated scheme on Curry, one Curry said he hadn't seen all season.

People keep bringing up Brad Stevens whenever they mention Duke and UNC openings in 5 years. The problem with that though is, he's gonna keep winning at Butler and when that happens their budget just gets bigger and bigger and they are more likely to keep him happy. Also, I believe he and his wife have strong midwestern roots and anyone that knows anything about Indiana is that they are where they've always wanted to be already. They have no concept of Tobacco Road being the greatest place on college basketball earth like we do. And lastly, if he does keep winning and decides to leave Butler, he will have the opportunity to go to any Big Ten school he wants and they all can pay as much as Duke and UNC.

Nah, I was referring only to coaches because of those who try and discredit coach K for having some "bad" losses.

Link to K yelling at refs down by 30. I am pretty sure he sat there with a disappointed look on his face. Again, why are UNC fans making stuff up. You sound like DSvX about the rotations playing at the end. Plenty of factual negative for Duke in this game, no need to make up false ones.

That 4 will be shrinking to 3 if there is any justice in this world. Using an illegally paid player nullifies that.

Subtract that and the illegal Maggette wins and he should be below 900.

Xs/Os is not based on tournament performance alone. If it were, then K's record is still strong, including the afore meantioned post sweet 16 stats for K, which are outstanding.

Back on topic, do you have a top ten you would like to submit? No, it will not receive any national attention like this one but hey, we could all get a good laugh here. If you get bored, hook us up, or don't. 'Doesn't matter either way.
