Duke will be a better team when Ryan Kelly returns than the 15-0 team. Amile Jefferson is going to play big minutes in March.

Solid as I read on here lately. You outlined it in a solid fashion. Your 3rd paragraph is on target. Duke is learning to play without Kelly. The entire teams benefits on down the line. I still think though that Duke can benefit when Curry drives the ball to the basket to open up the offense. He can still hit the 3's. Strong guards need to penetrate. Clemson's little guard kept them in the game against State by driving the ball.

I love every second Amile is on the floor. His energy going for boards and length contesting other teams' bigs around the basket is something Duke has lacked since Lance Thomas graduated. And he didn't foul out in 12 minutes last night so that's encouraging. It seems like he's starting to take away minutes from Hairston and deservedly so.

  • seedofdoubt Jan 18, 2013

Not much driving to the basket with this team; although Jefferson's spin and drive late in the second half was a thing of beauty. How quick was that!

I never thought Duke was a favorite to win it all this year before, during or after the 15-0 start. Coach K is the master at getting his team playing a high level quickly as soon as practice starts in October. That's why Duke always wins alot in Nov/Dec and shoots up to the top of the rankings. Now we're starting to see other teams with average coaches getting their teams playing at a high level, but it took them 15-17 games to get there. But I never will believe that just because a team beat another in November that they will also beat them if they play again in March or April. Duke would have their hands full with all 3 teams they beat in the Bahamas if they played them again. Not just Louisville (who is the real #1 this year), but VCU and Minnesota as well.

I do think Kelly being out helps Duke's chances as long as he returns at 100% before March. Because when he returns, Duke will have developed the ability to win in the style they played with him in going 15-0 as well as the new style that they are just developing. I don't take alot of stock in the way they've played last night and the State game, they are still just getting used to playing without Kelly and with a much less agressive Curry. Curry's still going to get his points, but earlier in the year it was a better mix of threes and drives to the basket. Now, it looks like he's more cautious and primarliy just taking threes.

Yes, they would be #1 by default, but do you honestly think they are the best team? Do you honestly think this team can beat a full-strength UL? Those boys were a FF team last year. They are loaded.

And spare me the "their resume" talk. I don't care what a voter thinks, I only care about results on the floor. Being #1 means absolutely nothing.

Michigan beating Minnesota in their house is deserving of a number 1 vote or 50. They have one loss as well.

I know some of you are going to jump all over me. I just can't help that I am chock full of common sense and reality. Duke is good, not great. They have a WAYS to go. I hope that Amile can make me look like a fool. I hope that Murphy can contribute as in the process give me the middle finger. I hope Sheed can get out of his slump (last night was a start) and be the man offensively he was from the start. I hope Cook continues to play well and lead the team. I hope Mason gets rid of that terrible hook shot and starts playing like a man and dunking in people's faces (notice how excited K got, he knows this is true as well) instead of throwing the ball off the top and side of the backboard. And finally, I hope Hairston realizes that he is a 7-10 minute a game player and not our go to guy every time down the court on offense. I swear that guy has never seen a shot he didn't like.

Anyway, go ahead and jump all over me. Yes, there is a Duke fan that can critique his boys objectively.

Reagardless, Duke already beat Louisville. If UL loses to Syracuse, both IU and UL would have 2 losses to Duke's 1.

Without Kelly, Duke is not the best team in the country. But their resume is. And that's what voters go off.

At least you get it bmpayne. You are one of the only Duke fans that actually seems to enjoy sports as much as the smack talk. I agree, UL and Michigan look very strong. Duke is definitely up there, but just are not as strong offensively as those two teams are at the moment.

don't care what happens in the UL vs Syracuse game....Duke should not be #1. I think that Michigan and UL are probably the two best teams in the country. I will throw IU in there as well. They seem to just not like playing Wisconsin.

The further in the season dook is at #1...

    the greater the disappointment...

if they don't win it all.

(then again, getting past the Sour 16 would be a significant achievement)

I'd say dook was a lock before the season began with a team full of experience and needing to make up for that poor showing last year.

The young Tar Heels are improving, you better keep an eye out for them. Their not done yet.

It's amusing how badly dookies want to be ranked #1 in January. LOL. Why so insecure?

Lehigh could care less about where you're ranked in January. It's the end of the season that matters.

    When will you ever learn?

    LOL

Don't see Louisville losing on their home court. That Miami game is one of two away games I had circled as a potential loss. State was the other. Not saying Duke will lose on the 23rd, but Miami will be a tough nut to crack, even without Reggie Johnson. Kadji and Mason will be fun to watch, though Kadji is prone to foul problems. I believe the game will be decided on how much support Mason gets in the post. If Rasheed breaks out of his shooting slump (hopefully tonight against GT), Duke should beat Miami by 10. Duke will win walking away against Tech. and the bench will get some playing time.

With #2 Indiana losing at home to an unranked Wisconsin club this week, and #1 Louisville hosting #5 Syracuse on Saturday, it looks like Duke could be back at #1 by Monday.

Unless, that is, Duke loses to Georgia Tech tonight. Or if Louisville beats Syracuse. Duke has the weekend off, and will play @Miami on Wednesday Jan 23rd for a chance at #1 in the ACC.
