Is It Just Me......................

The officiating at the UNC-MD game seemed mostly OK, though probably because all the early MD turnovers and not anything the refs did. After a TO, Carolina was well into its transition passing offense, keeping Maryland out of position and giving UNC wide open shots, with Bullock hitting most of them. Maryland was rarely able to set up its collapsing half-court defense during the first half.
The second half felt more like a scrimmage, with each team mostly running their half-court games on O and D. UNC rarely pressed backcourt or trapped mid court except to protect the lead. Roy tried various lineups with few starters during most of the second half, particularly from about 14:00 to 7:00 remaining. The starters were well-rested for final minutes, mostly content to hold the ball for most of the shot clock and then getting the basket.
I have seen this scenario over and over when Carolina is playing teams coached by the extended Carolina basketball family (including the closely related Kansas family). You don't run the score up or humiliate the other team; good sportsmanship in general, more so in these cases. Note that Roy would only discuss the first half publicly, but did not criticize the second half play. Following the unwritten protocol, Maryland could discuss their improved play in the second half, the learning experience for a young team, etc.
BTW the finesse game was also the style on the West Coast, including the PAC, and in the Southern Conference. I think the erosion of the rules was heavily influenced by the arrival of the ABA and its gimmicks and the emphasis on show-off moves previously relegated to the Globetrotters. Also TV sports highlights on the local evening news. Many of those moves are impossible even for MJ if rules on traveling/extra steps and on palming the ball were strictly enforced.

You could very well be right about that. No time to really research it right now. The best game of the day starts at noon so I have to make sure I have every thing in order. Cold beer, check, snacks, check, kids locked in their room, check. :)

RD, they did get away with "SOMETHING". They stole our lunch money.
Actually my hat is off to State because they played what I think was their best game of the year so far and probably wouldn't have won with anything less. If Woods shoots like he did against MD. (maybe their defense was the reason?) then they don't beat Duke even though it was at home.IMHBDO

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that back in the late 80's or early 90's that was the rationale used for swapping refs with the SEC for the ACC Tourney. I don't know how long that experiment lasted but since then the ACC has won 8 Natty's and had several runner-up finishes. Not saying that was a factor but just making an observation, however.

They actually used to call bball a non contact sport. The ACC teams played more of a finesse game but got killed in the NCAAs because they got beat up. They have corrected that but I think I still like the finesse game better.

Sounds like the wolfers doing a bit of excuse making for the MD whipping....funny though that MD had put state kollege in the bonus early in the 2nd half and state kollege only had 3 team fouls in last 2 minutes. Sounds like things were going the wolfers way....but to them...of course it was against them...lolololol

Mo, you must have been listening to Bob Harris call that game lol
I swear every play he said State got away with "SOMETHING"

Very good observation '70. Time was the ACC flamed in the NCAA's due to the soft nature of their play in regular season but no more. As for unc, they shoot as many or more threes than anybody else this year. No bonafide post players present and more outside shooters than in years past. Same for next year too.
