Since the '97-'98 season Duke Men's Basketball has held the #1 spot for 72 weeks. That's 8 weeks more than the next two programs combined.

Your logic is mind-numbingly stupid. A statement that dook couldn't surpass UNC until Dean retired is not, by any intelligent person's logic, the same as stating that UNC's expected struggles during a rebuilding year have anything at all to do with a single record k sets. So, yes, georgie boy, we can have it both ways.

Earlier in this thread someone pointed out that Dean retired and his absence coincided with Duke's success. Implying that Duke could not hold the top spot as long as Dean was around. So, by that logic UNC is struggling during the spell when Duke is excelling and K is breaking/setting records. You can't have it both ways.
You don't need a link...I said it. Link that.

Um.... we're going to need a link to UNC fans claiming k caused us to miss the tournament. We're also going to need a road map to show how you get from dook's prior history at #1 to that affecting UNC now.

  • Brackettville Feb 5, 2013
    Sports Legend

"Does it look like dook's 72 wks in the #1 spot is affecting anybody now?"

Yes. UNC has missed the NCAA tournament 2 times in that time span. By UNC fans' logic, K caused that. Just like you people say Dean's retirement is the reason Duke has had success in that time span.

UNC's absence from the Top 25 in not embarrassing to us because we expected it.
What you are embarrassed by is of no interest to us.

UNC's absence from the top 25 looks "to us as everyone else in the basketball-watching world: embarrasing." Considering how highly UNC fans hold their dear program.

No, I picked the early 2000's because this was when Duke was running roughshod over a very weak conference, including UNC. Even if UNC had been good, like the mid-2000's, the rest of the league was markedly worse than the 80's and K has benefitted from that.

Smart move. Imagine if UNC fans didn't have that. Basically you would have nothing but some banners and a NT that is currently being carbon dated to be authenticated.

The same way UNC padded their numbers against the all time record between Duke/UNC prior to K's arrival. Since K took over Duke has been closing ground on the head to head record between schools. I have no doubt that if Dean coached longer K would have evened the head to head record with Dean. But, that was not to be and Dean retired while he was ahead....like he should have. :) He did what he was suppose to do.

I never said Duke didn't play basketball before K got there. I am well aware of where the program was prior to his arrival. UNC was already a strong program nationally with NTs.
I am 40 yrs old and grew up in Durham. My point is how he impacted the program and took it to the next level. NOBODY can dispute facts.

K is the best that ever coached.
