    Welcome back, Scottie.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin will have yet another opening on his coaching staff to fill because assistant Scottie Montgomery is taking a job with Duke University.

Montgomery coached the Steelers' wide receivers the past three seasons. He will become the offensive coordinator at Duke, a source told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Montgomery coached the wide receivers at Duke, his alma mater, for four seasons before joining the Steelers staff in 2010.

He was among Duke's all-time leading receivers.

Tomlin has hired two coaches since the end of the season, Jack Bicknell Jr. as his offensive line coach and Danny Smith to coach the special teams. He still has not filled one other position.

Scottie Montgomery coming back to Duke football
    Submitted by laura_keeley on 02/08/2013 - 12:21

Scottie Montgomery, one of the best Duke wide receivers in school history, is returning to his alma mater.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette first reported that Montgomery, who has coach wide receivers for the Pitttsburgh Steelers since 2010, was leaving Mike Tomlin's staff. Before joining the Steelers, Montgomery coached at Duke from 2006-09 and was retained when David Cutcliffe took over in Dec. 2007.

During his coaching career at Duke, Montgomery was also one of the Blue Devils' most effective recruiters, landing players like Donovan Varner, Josh Snead, Desmond Scott and Conner Vernon, who finished his college career as the the ACC's leader in pass receptions and receiving yardage.

Montgomery's official role on the staff has not been determined. With the departure of Matt Lubick to Oregon and Ron Middleton to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the past month, the Blue Devils have a bevy of responsibilities and titled to distribute: associate head coach, recruiting coordinator, passing game coordinator, special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach. Those decisions, along with another hire, will be made in the coming weeks.

One position Montgomery will not have is the role of offensive coordinator.
"Kurt Roper is Duke's offensive coordinator and will continue to handle the play-calling element as he has for the past five seasons," Duke sports information director Art Chase said. "Coach Cutcliffe and Coach Roper are working together to fill the vacancies on the offensive staff."

Montgomery graduated from Duke in 1999 and led the Blue Devils in receiving for three years. He played in the NFL for three seasons with the Denver Broncos (2000-02) and Oakland Raiders (2003).
