But we all have to agree about Lawson, when he went out with the toe injury, and came back UNC would probably not have won it in 09. Dude is tearing up the NBA right now.

So true Ship the rings are what counts the most!! King Rice did give Hurley fits. I really thought he was going to cry a couple of times! No one can argue Handstravel's stats in college, but alot of greats in the ACC didnt stay four years either, Worthy, Jordan, Bias, Williams etc..

+1...forgot about him. The ACC has had its share of great PGs/players. There have been many individual players who put up great numbers but only a select few can claim NTs. Naturally, they should get first dibs on "the greatest" list. Just looking at the entire body of work. Something else. If a player only played 1 season, he shouldn't get serious consideration. IMO

LOL....Let's deal with reality, shall we? Certain players played, and won, NTs. Hurley has 2 & that's a fact. You should ID the number of PGs in ACC history who won back-to-back NTs. I get a kick out of those who say things like, "If they didn't have this player or that player, they wouldn't have won." Let's stay with the facts.

You can dig on Hansbrough all you like but I have a question for you. Which former ACC player can claim both #1 scorer all-time in the ACC & a NT? Is what it is. Just an fyi....if Lawson doesn't have Hansbrough, he doesn't win a NT either. Works both ways!

You're the guy who always likes to talk about championships when evaluating great players. Ya can't start changing the rules at this point.

  • Toddler10-21 Feb 13, 2013

Two titles, Williams, and Lawson. Take Lawson off that UNC team, and Handstravel would have 0 titles. Take GH, or CL off those teams, and there would be zero titles for Duke in 91, and 92. J Williams on that team, and would have been 3 straight for Duke. But really they both are Champs. Hurley played 4 years also.

Muggsy played pickup at the Y I used to play at right after his NBA career ended. He was a great guy, great with the kids and could dribble thru any clutter of players trying to defend him as if the ball was a yo-yo on a string connected to his hand.

Randolph Childress set an ACC record in the ACC Tourney from Wake Forest in scoring back in the day. He's working at Wake today. I forgot to mention him earlier. He should be in the mix too.

Loads of names in this one. Phil Ford could take over a game as well as any in his time frame. We know that it has changed dramatically since too. Hurley, Lucas, Price, Anderson, and Paul's time frame was a much different game then too. Bigger, faster, and stronger rules this game today. Kyrie is coming on strong. Chris Paul is as solid as a rock. Time will tell in this one. Jason Williams was one of the best ever in college. It's a darn shame we didn't get to see him deliver his skills in the NBA.

NTs - Anderson, Ford, Lucas, Irving, Price, Lawson, & Paul have 1 combined.

    Hurley - 2 NTs - a true floor general.

Jason was also two time player of the year, and also won a title. Hurley was good also, but playing with Christian, and Grant wow! During Hurley's time I think Kenny Anderson was better. All time, Phil Ford, Lucas, Irving, Price, Lawson, Paul all were better than Hurley.

  • Leave it to Beaver Reruns Feb 12, 2013

Yeah, if you are going by talent and God given skill, it would be Kyrie then Jason with Bobby coming in a distant third. But, if I am asking for a guard to win me a big game or title, I would take Hurley any day of the week.

Had Jason stayed his senior year, he would have smashed the scoring record. Dude was a baller.

In terms of shear talent and intelligence of the game, I gotta hand it to Jay. If Kyrie Irving would have stayed for 4 years, he'd be the best by far to EVER play the point...not only for Duke and the ACC, but possibly the country.

Great guy. Love to hear him talk College Basketball. He along with Bilas are not biased ( Unlike Hubert Davis) they just speak the truth. Still in my opinion the greatest to play the point at Duke. He also would have been a all star in the NBA!

Thanks so much for this, 903! I heard DG talk about it on his show today. I remember the accident, and remember thinking - like everyone else - "Man, he threw it all away". I'm so glad that's not the case. I also remember how K was at Jay Will's bedside, supporting his former player any way he could.

I always enjoy watching Jay on ESPN, and his intelligence always shines. No one can dissect a game like someone who actually played the game. I'm sad that he wasn't able to have the NBA career his talent would have allowed, but I'm happy that he's found a successful career in broadcasting.
