I don't follow Larkin or Miami but you know how that stuff goes. There is the Miami thing, south Fla., the hype, & he has name recognition with his dad although his dad played baseball. I don't know how good he really is but it's a popularity contest down there.

Hey Hokie research some of UNC, and Duke games in the past about the free throws. Im pretty sure you will find some games where Duke, and UNC ruled the free throw line. Remember the tourney game UNC/Gtown a few years ago? UNC shot over twenty throws in the first half. Thompson told the refs going into the locker room, that if you are going to call it tight then call it tight on both sides. The rest was history in the second half!!

Miami won't have a lot next year. They don't have a strong recruiting class coming in next year, and they will lose most of their starters. I don't see him leaving though. It's not like he needs the money.

The media has given Miami all of the ink of late. Larkin is the QB. He runs this team as well as any, but he isn't the best PG in the Country either. He didn't do jack last night. He played his heart out for 40 minutes. What else?

mo, first of all: love the Lone Ranger!!!
but, yes that is him... the same guy who outplayed BOTH Plumuglies for the last two years of his career... statically he dominated BOTH Plumlees...
and as i stated earlier: Mason is not that hot of prospect... He has one post move.... his other moves consists of hooking the defender when he goes right or left...
don't get me wrong: I really really like Mason.... I KNOW Mason... I worked around him for the first 3 years of his college career... He is the type of person that you would want your daughter to bring home....
but, his NBA prospects aren't that great... Zeller isn't setting the world on fire in the NBA and he most certainly outplayed both Mason and Miles when they were on the court....
I just see him as role player... off side rebounder and athlete to run the floor...
post play will have to be taught to him... He didn't get it at Duke... in the correct system (ie Denver Nuggets) he could be a solid player b/c he IS an athlete... but, you will never (EVER) be able to dump the ball into him in the post and expect results at that level... if Len can throw that hook what do you think that D12, Blake Griffin, Garnett, etc, etc... will do to that thing? I just wish he would have been taught better post up game.... If he would have been (and someone still may) his ceiling would be limitless... but, that is not the case.... at this time...

I agree Battling. If his average keeps up, how in the heck can he not be on this team? Larkin is a Soph, and he has time to get all of the accolades. He's not in front of Green, nor is Curry, or Brown. No team in the ACC as lowly as is VT that one player caused so much attention. Erick could have scored more points than he has. He's one of the most unselfish players that I've seen in years. He passed when he should have been shooting it. In a tight game would Lebron or Kobe pass it? Heck no. Green should have shot a heckeva lot more. Who else can shoot on this team? He played on a weak team, but the team finally showed courage to take UNC and State to OT. Who in the heck saw this?

How many people on the Sportsfan have ever seen one team shoot 43 free throws to 7?

I appreciate your statement. Top teams that are winning can usually get more media attention vs a last place team in the ACC. Again. No player in the ACC has played more minutes than Erick, and no one has had to work any harder when they switch 2-3 to guard him. His heart for this team, and to win a game is out there. The entire VT team played UNC and and State to an OT. Most teams and players would have given up.

Green should be the front runner! He's having to carry this young VT team on his back and doing it well. Plumlees numbers will go down as the year progresses but thats typical of a tired Duke team. Still somewhat deserving. Miami should have at least one player in consideration, maybe Larkin!

I have stated that Plumlee is the most improved player in the ACC this year. I stated this several weeks ago. With out him Duke, wouldn't be where they are today. No player can have a strong scoring night each time out. Larkin had 7 points, 3 TO's and 3 Ast's in 40 minutes last night. Mason had 4 points against Maryland. Duke also played a bunch of games close together. UNC played 3 different guys on Green during this game. As long as Green is appreciated, then that is what VT fans want. Had we been .500 in the ACC would this have made a difference? Miami is winning with 10 juniors and seniors. Larkin is getting some accolades because of this.

green shouldn't be considered at all INO...
he did not do well when guarded by bigger guards ie the UNC game...
he didn't even get 20 in the game...
If Miami goes undefeated in the ACC then Larkin deserves it...
he is the leader and the driving force behind this run...
after all who runs that pick and role with Kadjhi?
Larkin... btw greens numbers from the Feb 2nd game in the dome: 43 mins 7-21 fg, 2-4 3's, 6 reb, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 0 to.. 16 pts... held below the average by 9 points and the fg% is dreadful... he will learn how to player bigger guards but, at this point I think that bigger (and somewhat quick) guards can slow him enough to make him a non factor...

Larkin is a great PG on a senior laden team right now. The media has hyped this young man too much IMO. Like I said, I hope that Erick gets a bunch of votes. If he doesn't win, no one can take away his numbers.

The POY award is generally reserved for those who did great things on good teams as the two go hand in hand. Doesn't matter what Plumlee's NBA potential is. He's having a better all-around season than Green & Duke is far better than VT. VT is in last place & Green has taken approx. 50 more shots than Plumlee (2nd in that category as well) & over 50 more than the next guy. Apparently, Green runs down the court & shoots & that's the extent of their offense. I'm certain other players around the league could go for 25 a night if their coaches turned them loose. Helps to have balance.

Never said he shouldn't get any consideration, only that those on last place teams should not get MVP. In other words, he can be considered with others but shouldn't receive serious consideration (kinda like the Heisman voting). I posted that players on last place teams should not win the award as that should be reserved for those on winning teams. The MVP is for those who mattered most to their teams. Take Plumlee or Larkin away from Duke/Miami & where are they in the standings? Take Green away from VT & does it matter? They're already in last. Giving a kid the POY award on a last place team is laughable. They can mention him but just don't vote him POY. Others are more deserving. As Sir Charles once said, "Any knucklehead can score."

I guess we will see how many NBA GMs think the way you do.

So tell me, how many wins do you have as a player or a coach? To say the man is not talented proves that if anyone doesn't know anything about basketball, it's you.

  • hi_i_am_wade Feb 18, 2013
    Sports Legend

Anybody who uses "Plumlee" and "talented" in the same sentence does not know basketball. And yes, I am referring to all the so-called experts out there in the media. Seth Curry is, by miles and miles, better than all the Plumlees combined, and thus even more than Mason Plumlee. Mason Plumlee deserves the NPOY award about as much as I deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. Another advantage of Seth Curry is he doesn't have the typical Duke arrogance that makes every team in the world cheer against Duke.

Eric Green of Virginia Tech is my pick. Without him, VT isn't in any game. With him, VT can hang with NC State and UNC and most of the ACC.

No player on UNC deserves 1st team all ACC. The one that is closest is PJ Hairston.

CJ Leslie is good but lazy. He doesn't deserve it either.

Good points. State and UNC for example used 3 different players on him during these games. Others have done similar things.

    Green is averaging 25.3 ppg. FG's 47.3%. 3pt's 38%. Free throws 81.2%. Rb's 4.2 ppg. 36.4 minutes per game.

It actually says more that he puts up huge numbers despite not having any help around him. Because when they play a game, the defensive game plan is probably focused on stopping Green. He is doing it against defensive schemes designed to stop him primarily if the rest of the team is as weak as the record indicates.

We need Kelly to win any game outside of Cameron and Miami in Cameron. The 2nd time thru the ACC is harder because all your weaknesses are exposed and it isn't hard to see what to focus on when trying to defend Duke without Kelly. I also do think it's valid to use the tired excuse for the one game at Maryland since they were coming off 5 days off after a home game and Duke had 2 road games and UNC at home in that same span. They cannot use that excuse on Thursday at VA Tech.

  • Toddler10-21 Feb 18, 2013

Bottom line we need Kelly back. " Mason has no hands for a big boy, if he would just go up strong like a big man is suppose to do. Howis kelly gonna help? Kelly will just stand on the 3 line, and look for a OPEN shot. Speaking of a big boy, I would rather have Mason in the paint grabbing boards, and blocking shots than Kelly. Dude is just a 6 foot elevin inch guard hoping to be open to get a shot off! Duke needs Kelly in the paint where he is not use to playing.

Good one. Green can't help it if his team doesn't have good players like some. How can he be penaltized? He has done a quality job in several areas. The POY can win this one in spite of a poor team. If he wins OK. If he doesn't be should get a truck load of votes.

  • Leave it to Beaver Reruns Feb 18, 2013

It frustrates me every time he puts the ball on the floor. I don't know how to break him of that habit, but if he would just go up strong like a man, he would have so much more success in the paint. For a big boy, he has absolutely no hands. People knock the ball out of his hands way too much.

Bottom line: We need Kelly to have any real shot at making a run in either tourney.
