Well, I have to say I am so disappointed that my Spartans could not seal the deal against the Hoosiers. We had our chances but just could not put the ball in the bucket in the last minute. IU showed they are #1. Miami squeezes out yet another close win, showing some toughness in tight end of game situations.

I still expect coach Izzo to have the Spartans ready for another deep tourney run.

Every game from the very 1st to the Tournament counts. All. The committee looks at all stats. That's why UNC is a bubble team right now. Miami should have gone down by now in the ACC. Talking about lucky at times. Clemson had them @ home.

I didn't say that you said they were meaningless either....

You are right, there is no exact science to know for sure who is better than another....THANK GOD we have a tourney to determine the champ!

I didn't say the Nov and Dec games are meaningless. I said they "don't mean as much to me as results in February". With the key words being "to me". The reason why I probably believe there is some merit to this is because every march when the bracket comes out, one of the key criteria you hear about is Won-Loss record in the last 10 games.

As for Duke. I don't feel as confident about Duke now as compared to how confident I was when they were 15-0.

There is no exact science to debating which team is better than another. It's all based on personal opinion until everyone plays the exact same schedule.

  • Leave it to Beaver Reruns Feb 19, 2013

To me, the whole argument that November and December games should not mean as much as January and February games is bogus. If that is the case, we should start the season in January.

but you just told me November games do not matter to you....so 10-3 makes a 2 seed?

    Duke's 22-3. I don't think any team with only 3 losses deserves to fall to a 4 or 5 seed. I think a #2 seed is fair.

so by your standards, we deserve a 4 maybe 5 seed based on what we have done in January and February?

I totally agree about Izzo teams in Novemeber being different than Izzo teams in February, but I am not going to discredit Miami's head-to-head win over the Spartans.

I'd say Miami beating Michigan State is pretty impressive....right? When was that played? I hate to say it but wins in Nov and Dec don't mean as much to me as results in February.

What about that thumping they put on Duke? Pretty impressive also. As much of a Duke homer as I am, I hate to say it but Duke without Ryan Kelly is no match for Miami.

I am not trying to say that Miami should be ranked ahead of Michigan State, just saying it is not as cut and dry as you seem to make it.Point taken. Michigan State doesn't have a perfect conference record like Miami. I'm just saying when conference play starts, you have to take into account the stength of the conference when comparing teams from different conferences.

I also take into account Izzo's history. It seems year after year, his teams start slow and off the radar then sometime in mid-Feb, they end up in the top ten and eventually a favorite to make the Final Four. This year's no different.

    Feb 2 @#3 IND L81-73
    Feb 9 @WIS L65-62 OT
    Feb 12 @#8 MSU L75-52

That's what I'm saying. Miami plays in a weak conference. Michigan State (and Michigan) play at places like IU and Wisconsin and Michigan State.

I love the ACC and all, but c'mon, the Big Ten is just a better conference.

Miami plays in a much weaker conference than Michigan State. Michigan State beat the cr*p out of Michigan just last week, 75-52. That was more impressive than anything Miami has done this year.

They host IU tonight, obviously if they win that to go with beating Michigan, their resume will be pretty solid.

Miami has won 13 in a row overall and is undefeated in conference play including defeating the (then) #1 ranked team. Michigan State has won 5 in a row with the biggest win against the #4 team. They also have 2 conference loses. I give the edge to Miami.

I'd love to think Duke could win the rematch at home against Miami, but Miami got the W last season at Cameron including Reggie going off for 27 and 12 and all their starters in that game are still on this team. So they aren't gonna be phased a bit that this game is in Cameron. Maybe Ryan Kelly will be back, but even if he is, the game is only a little over two weeks away and he's still doing pool work, so his conditioning and timing aren't going to be back yet.

That's not the point. I asked a pretty simple question. Which is the better team? Not who might win on any given night. If seedofdoubt thinks Miami should be ranked #1, isn't he saying he thinks they are the better team? I think Miami is very good. I don't think they are better than Indiana. What may or may not happen in the NCAAT is irrelevant today.

After the ugly game last night, I don't think Miami is deserving of a #2. IU is front of them IMO. UVA could beat them. Larkin was shut down last night and both teams shot dismally. Miami looked like a middle team of the ACC last night. I know this can happen to any team. What IU does will determine how it comes down to rankings.

Based on what Miami did against Clemson, I don't think Clemson would've won at Maryland. And duke would've beaten Clemson, based on clemson's performance in that game. I think miami's about to lose a few. Maybe not more than one in the regular season but probably one regular season and one in the acc tourney.

Do you think they are better than Indiana, or just that they should be ranked ahead of them? Unfortunately, those two things aren't always the same, as different poll voters use different criteria when casting their ballot.

If those two teams met ten times on a neutral court, how many times do you think Miami would come out on top?

well, he is talking about next week's poll, correct? The NEXT poll comes out on 25 Feb 13. If Miami beats Duke next week (you are correct about that being next week) Miami would have a shot at being on the top of the poll in 2 weeks.

IU plays at #4 Michigan State Tues. Miami plays UVa and Wake. If neither team loses, there is no way Miami jumps over IU this week. I know there's a good chance IU loses this game but if they don't, nothing Miami can do in those two games is more impressive than beating MSU on the road.
