'Voice of Cameron' dies at 78

Posted December 27, 2011

Dr. Art Chandler, the longtime public announcer for the Duke men's basketball team died Christmas Day at age 78, the university said Tuesday.

Chandler first took the mic in 1970 and called more than 600 games for the Blue Devils.

His signature call to rally the Cameron Crazies, "Here comes Duke!" was inspired by player Alaa Abdelnaby, of the Class of 1990, who suggested Chandler think of a simple, memorable way to introduce the team.

"I think a PA should not call attention to himself," Chandler said.

In his "day job," Chandler had a long career teaching medical students at both Duke and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Luckily I met him when I came to Duke 40 yrs ago. Had the pleasure to visit with him at the beach this summer.... Just a good person to be around, made everyone's day better....it was always about someone else.... not himself...gonna miss him..

My favorite memory of this guy was when he mispronounced Jason Capel's last name despite his brother Jeff playing at Duke for 4 years before Jason played there.
