The Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce will present the Civic Honor Award to Duke men's basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski and his family during their 2012 Annual Meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

The Civic Honor Award recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the Durham community. Coach Krzyzewski, his wife Mickie and daugthers Debbie Savarino, Lindy Frasher and Jamie Spatola will be recognized for their accomplishments on and off the court.

As the winningest coach in Division I basketball, Coach Krzyzewski’s accomplishments and achievements span 32 seasons at Duke University and include four National Championships (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010) and 12 National Coach of the Year honors (eight seasons). Coach Krzyzewski also serves as Head Coach of the United States National Team for USA Basketball.

In 2006, Coach K founded the Emily Krzyzewski Center, a community center that encourages economically disadvantaged students to dream big, act with character and purpose, strive for academic excellence, and reach their highest potential as future citizen leaders. Coach K and his entire family are committed to making the Emily Krzyzewski Center a driving force within the Durham-area community.

The meeting will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel & Convention Center.

Speaking as someone that grew up in Durham, thank you Coach K, Mickie and family for everything you did for the city of Durham. Bringing a winning basketball program to Duke was only a bonus, positively impacting the lives of everyone in our community is what I am grateful for.

I, too, have lived my entire life in Durham and Duke University has been a part of my life from the very beginning, as my father is a Duke graduate and my mother is a Duke retiree.

Durham is Duke and Duke is Durham. Many thanks to Coach K and his family for being outstanding ambassadors for my hometown. This is an honor that is well-deserved.

Congratulations, Coach!

Now earn the "honor" and accept those losses!

If you understood NCAA rules governing such leaves of absences, you'd keep quiet. Well, then again, maybe you wouldn't. You only look more and more foolish when you post about this situation. You don't have to be a Duke fan to applaud a person who gives back to his community. Look at all that Dean Smith did in his heyday. A lot of us might not be fans of UNC sports but that in no way lessens all that DES accomplished and is still accomplishing. Dean did more for the ACC than any coach ever will as a teacher, innovator and developer of men. Coach K is carrying on that tradition and doing so quite well, but it was Dean who blazed the trail first. Wish we had more like them.

Congratulations to Coach K and his family. I like to hear stories about how great coaches make a difference off the court.
