Durham, N.C. — The Duke women’s tennis team finished third in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Rankings for the 2011-12 season, and for the second straight year, it was announced late Tuesday evening. The Blue Devils have been ranked in the top five in each of the last 28 polls – the longest active streak in the nation.
Duke concluded a very successful season with a 29-3 overall record, tying the 2008-09 national championship team for the second-most wins in a season. The Blue Devils set a program record with 17 shutouts, in a season where Duke claimed its 20th Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season title with a perfect 11-0 mark, before going on to win the ACC Tournament for the 17th time in program history. Additionally, the Blue Devils reached the ITA National Team Indoor Championship match and its eighth overall appearance in the NCAA Semifinals.
The Blue Devils will return seven of their eight letterwinners next season, including all six singles starters, who combined for a 124-22 (.850) record in dual singles matches this past season.
The final ITA singles and doubles rankings will be released June 6.
