Durham, N.C. — The K Academy is more than grown men paying $10,000 a person to play in a Duke basketball fantasy camp.
"Besides the charity that all the money goes to, the best reason about this is it's a reunion for the old players," said former Duke center Christian Laettner.
And there are more than 30 of them here.
But the main focus of K Academy, now in its tenth year, is always on the Duke basketball family patriarch.
Head coach Mike Krzyzewski met with the media this afternoon and said, while he has plenty of years left at Duke, this summer's Olympics will be his last as U.S. coach.
"It's just for planning purposes. It's more of an ending of a great seven years, actually for more than that, because I've been involved with USA basketball since I was the coach at Army," said Krzyzewski. "There's a lot of pressure to win. Right now, at this time in my life, I still enjoy that pressure. It will be time to move on after that."
As for the former players, Laettner is pursuing his own coaching career in the NBA.
"Over the spring, I went and coached in the D-League, and I learned a lot there. I had a blast. I loved it," said Laettner.
Former center Brian Zoubek has also been recent news with the announcement he's opening a bakery in New Jersey that sells, cream puffs.
What does former teammates think of this venture?
"I get a little bit of crap for it, but they support me," said Zoubek. "I've got a great support system, but kind of takes a little bit of a ribbing."
It's obvious on this day that former Duke players of all generations consider themselves a close-knit family.

I've seen more of the bad back occurences but they are both wrong. At least Duke losing to Lehigh has decreased the percentage of posts that refer to the bad back if that can be seen as a positive.

oh yeah...the bad back/quit on his team comments vs Dean's condition comments are about 20-1. But, when I see them it still makes me cringe. I know a couple of people fighting his disease....it i not a pretty site. I could not imagine looking into my father or mother's eyes and them not knowing who the hell I was. It would be a nightmare.

My wife's family is experiecning this with their mother. Her not remembering them is tough, but the stress of the situation goes well beyond the memory issues. There are a lot of demands placed on the family that one wouldn't think about until faced with it. Having said all of that, it's my understanding that Dean is not suffering from Alzheimer's. It has been explained to me that he has memory lapses, but there are times when he appears to be as sharp as ever. My mother-in-law hasn't remembered me for several years now and hasn't remembered my wife in the last two years. In fact, the only person she seems to recall at all is her husband.

Tough situation to be in, no doubt, and I'm sorry for what your wife and you are going through.
While Dean's condition has been described as a "cognitive disorder", I think it is a progressive disease. His family prefers to keep it a private matter. It was very sad to see him at the Sportsman Award (the one that K was nominated for and insisted that Dean receive the award as well). Roy had to help Dean accept the award and lead him back to his seat. Dean seemed so frail; it was very sad, but very touching to see how K insisted Dean receive the award along with himself.

Very well said Gunn...
And everyone says that Coach K is an egotistical, you now what...
He would not accept that award unless Dean was there to receive the same; however alot of people seem to think that Coach K is all about himself...

the bad thing is...it is not that hard to find people making fun of Dean's condition. Both, in my mind, are equally classless.

That's tough, man. I am sorry to hear that. Like I said earlier, I could not imagine having to go through it. I guess I didn't mean to say disease as much as condition because I knew he didn't have Alzheimer's.
