Durham, N.C. — Duke University begins the drive to to improve on last season's 3-9 record when fall camp opens for the Blue Devils Monday night.
To get the coveted six wins that would make them bowl eligible, the Devils will lean on senior wide receiver Conner Vernon.
"He's one of the best football players I've ever coached," head coach David Cutcliffe said of Vernon, high praise considering the coach's history with Peyton and Eli Manning at Tennessee.
"He is an All-American football player. He is not a possession receiver. He is a threat any time he gets his hands on the ball," Cutcliffe said.
Vernon, who has 13 touchdowns and 2,675 yards over three seasons, is only 35 catches away from setting the ACC record for receptions.
Vernon and Duke open the season Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. against Florida International University.

Coach Cut did a nice interview on WRAL tonight while talking about Vernon. Only 35 receptions needed for the record. Wishing him the very best.

He can win this one easily if he stays healthy. He should be between 60-70 catches.

I like the kid and hope he does well. I can see him being similar to Wes Welker.

As long as Vernon continues what he's done on and OFF the field as he has the last three years, it will be a great season. Some nfl teams might make a big mistake if they overlook him because of his height. He's the toughest guy at his size that I've ever seen.
