Duke signing day preview

As college football's national signing day approaches, more and more is made of each program's recruiting class, and rating services from all over the nation compare and contrast the athletes from whom various schools have earned oral commitments.

Prep school players and transfers from across the country are labeled with stars and, if they are good enough, invited to All-Star games in which they get to represent their future collegiate institution.

Any college football fan or coach knows that success starts with recruiting talented athletes, but there is no fool-proof formula for predicting which high school standouts will have the greatest impact at the college level.

Sometimes the "best" players in the nation pan out and become tomorrow's All-Americans, while other times they're busts. On the other hand, every year we see so-called sleeper prospects, those who didn't garner much in the way of star rankings or recruiting attention, but who blossom on the collegiate field.

Here is a look at the players from the Blue Devils' 2008 recruiting class who had the most impact on David Cutcliffe's team last season, along with their rankings at the time of their commitments.

(All rankings and measurements according to Rivals.com)

1.) Jay Hollingsworth: 3-star running back

Hollingsworth saw his potential for playing time drastically increase when starting running back Re'quan Boyette went down with a knee injury in training camp. Clifford Harris, Duke's senior backup at tailback, also went down with an injury, opening the door for the former Lee County standout. Hollingsworth responded by leading the team in rushing with 399 yards while ending up third on the team in all-purpose yards with 681. The 5-foot-11 running back also showed good hands out of the backfield, as his 25 catches were good for third on the team.

2.) Johnny Williams: 2-star wide receiver

A so-called sleeper out of high school, Williams finished second on the team with 30 catches on the year. His 327 receiving yards were also second to then-senior Eron Riley.

3.) Matt Daniels: 3-star safety

Daniels played well in 10 games during his true freshman season, finishing with 22 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery while also contributing on special teams.

4.) Donovan Varner: 2-star defensive back

Rivals.com listed Varner as a defensive back, but he ended up making his presence felt on the collegiate level on the other side of the ball. Varner battled through leg injuries throughout his freshman season, but still managed to haul in 21 catches for 164 yards, good for fourth on the team. The 5-8 Floridian also saw time as a punt returner and finished eighth on the team in all-purpose yards with 181.

5.) Lee Butler: 2-star athlete

After being labeled as simply an "athlete" during the recruiting process, Butler settled in as a defensive back when he arrived in Durham. As a number of injuries forced younger players to take on larger roles in the secondary, Butler ended up playing in 10 games and registering 12 tackles.

As for the 2009 class, here are the players expected to sign with the Blue Devils:

Oh yeh, the TD by Patrick and the hit Bailey was awsome. Patrick also had the two-point conversion against the Eagles. There are going to be many more to come in the NFL in years to come! I really feel this program is on the rise!

RE: Duke signing day preview

Thanks chndrsn-

Rey and Oghobaase will have to lead the defense. A kid by the name John Drew is coming in after being chased by A LOT of big SEC schools and also GT at DT. He is 6-2 305 and is fast as he-l for his size; he blows off a block like it's nothing. There are some other defensive guys coming in at LB, corner and Safety that are going to make an inmpact; plus Matt Daniel and Lee Butler will have a year under their belt. Lee's brother Lex is also coming. I'm hoping Poole (OG) 6-6 315 decides on Duke tomorrow, will be very helpful for the RB's. The list goes on and on! I'm praying for enough snow to cancel my obligation for tomorrow night, SO I CAN GO TO THE SIGNING PARTY!

Yes, I'm going tomorrow.

RE: Duke signing day preview

Great posts guy. I am really excited about the future of DUKE football. I'm not afraid to say, I'll probably be a little disappointed if we do not play in a bowl this season. Senior QB, experience at RB, good core of WR. Not sure about the O-Line, that will definitely be a big part of the team. Also Vince Oghobaase will be back for a 5th season on the D-Line. The biggest loss on the team will be Michael Tauiliili. What a stud on defense!! On another note, how 'bout the TD by former Blue Devil Ben Patrick in the SB? And also the big hit after the free kick by former Devil Patrick Bailey? Proud of these guys. Should be a few more playing on sundays in the near future coming out of Durham. GO DEVILS!!!

RE: Duke signing day preview

dukeblue-Cool! I'll have to tap your brain for info on this recruiting year. I saw Corey at the DUKE/UNC game, and thought he would be playing reciever or corner due to his size. But the film clips I've seen of him playing QB, he is quick and has a good arm.

TarheelTurtle-I agree with you about the facilities. WW used to be the best around, but that was a LONG time ago. I've been told by some at DUKE that there is a plan in place to start upgrading. Kevin White (AD) has mentioned it also. NCSU and UNC have it, so should Duke.

I am just so glad that all three schools have decided to do somehting about football. We all are the laughing stock of the league when Fall rolls around and there is no exscuse for it. I have a feeling that the fall will soon be like winter and spring (B-Ball); some jawing back and forth an maybe some championship contenders. DUKE, NCSU and UNC have done what was needed in hiring coaches and very good high school recruits have noticed; let the future begin. Cutcliffe, O'Brian and Butch all have what it takes to bring winning to the Triangle (Oh yeh, Wake has sort've kicked us all in the a-s, saying what's up)?

GO DUKE!
