Duke freshman Elliot Williams had an explosive game against Wake Forest on Sunday night, which raised the obvious question: Where has this been?
Williams started in the backcourt for the second straight game after getting few minutes in the previous games. He did not play in the loss to North Carolina Feb. 11 and played three minutes in the Feb. 7 win over Miami.
Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski bristled a bit Monday on the ACC teleconference when asked why Williams hadn’t played more previously.
“You have to do extra and he’s done extra,” Krzyzewski said. He said Williams has worked hard in practice and beyond to hone his game and prepare.
Asked if there were a turning point for Williams, in a game or a practice, Krzyzewski said no.
“There’s not one event. It’s a steady progression,” Krzyzewski said. “He’s evolving as a player. …
“For him, he’s a freshman. It’s taken hard work and commitment. And now he’s ready to do this. Now he’s ready and he’s taking advantage of it.”
