Durham claims opener in Toledo, 5-3

Posted June 16

Johnny Field doubled and homered, while Willy Adames collected three hits as Durham beat Toledo in the series opener on Friday night 5-3 at Fifth Third Field.

After Durham (41-25) went up 1-0 in teh first inning on consecutive doubles by Wilson Ramos and Adames, Toledo (28-37) bounced back with a pair of homers against starter Blake Snell (ND) for a 3-1 lead.

The game turned in the bottom of the fifth when Snell wiggled out of a bases loaded, one-out jam. Snell struck out Efren Navarro, then watched as Jake Bauers ran down a line drive in right field to preserve the 3-1 deficit.

In the top of the sixth, the Bulls would tie the game. Field struck for his sixth home run of the season against starter Drew Verhagen to cut the lead to 3-2. Ramos singled to left then scored on an opposite-field double by Bauers against the top of the left field wall.

After another escape in the seventh when Andrew Kittredge (W, 3-1) pitched out of a second and third, one-out situation, the Bulls went ahead for good.

Kean Wong doubled against lefty Blaine Hardy, then scored when Field yanked a double to left against right-hander Bruce Rondon for a 4-3 lead. Two batters later, Adames clubbed a double against the left field wall to make it 5-3.

Neil Wagner (S, 3) nailed down the save with a perfect ninth inning.

Snell worked six innings, allowing seven hits and two walks, fanning nine. Field finished 2-4 with a double, homer and two RBI. Adames went 3-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBI. Wilson Ramos was 2-4 with a double, run scored and threw out a runner stealing in his third MLB rehab game with Durham.

The Bulls regained a six game lead in the South over Gwinnett, which saw its winning streak snapped in Columbus.
