ECU, baseball coach Billy Godwin part ways

ECU baseball Billy Godwin

— East Carolina has decided not to renew head baseball coach Billy Godwin’s contract after nine years with the program.

The Pirates finished 33-26 (16-14 C-USA) this season and failed to make the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive season. ECU has not finished higher than third in their conference since 2009 – when Godwin won the C-USA Coach of the Year.

Godwin, who succeeded Randy Mazey in 2006, posted a 317-215-1 (.596) record at ECU, which includes five NCAA Regional appearances.

“I would like to thank Terry Holland and Nick Floyd for giving me the opportunity to be the head baseball coach nine years ago,” Godwin said. “I am extremely proud of and thankful for all of the players and coaches I have worked with in that time. We have averaged 37 wins a year on the field, graduated players and have 14 former Pirates playing in professional baseball. I will have nothing but great memories about my time spent as a Pirate.”

Director of athletics Jeff Compher said a national search to find a replacement will begin immediately but would not comment on potential candidates until the process has been completed.

“I fully understand the high level of competitive success that is expected of our baseball program at ECU,” Compher said. “It is our intention to hire someone who will build a national program that will graduate our student-athletes and compete for conference and national championships.”

Among the rumored candidates for the position are UNC pitching coach Scott Forbes.

ECU will make the move to the American Athletic Conference next season.

They beat most all ACC schools back then. Most didn't even schedule them.

How could ECU beat most all ACC schools back then if most ACC teams didn't schedule them?

He followed some great coaches. Obviously, he didn't recruit enough talent. Wish him the best. I watched ECU when I worked in Kinston in the early 2000's. They were near the top back then. They beat most all ACC schools back then. Most didn't even schedule them.

He is a good guy. He served ECU well. The problems started when Lync Jarret left to be the hitting coach at Auburn. That was when our bats cooled down for the last several years. Billy is a decent coach and a great man. He just couldn't attain the level that LeClair took us to. ECU baseball is expected to the go to the tournament every year.

Im hoping we have another Godwin in the dugout next year. Cliff Godwin that is, current Ole Miss assistant and former ECU player under Keith LeClair.

He didnt seem to have the background to continue ECU's climb up the ladder.

Too bad. I'm sure the next coach will be grateful to leave Rice behind.
