Greenville, N.C. —
Brian Mitchell is out after three seasons as East Carolina's defensive coordinator.
Coach Ruffin McNeill announced Thursday that the school will not renew Mitchell's contract.
Mitchell also coached their secondary and presided over a defense that ranked 104th in the Bowl Subdivision against the pass.
The Pirates ranked no better than 52nd nationally in any major defensive stat category, and allowed 591 total yards in a 43-34 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette in the New Orleans Bowl.
McNeill says "there's never a good time to make a coaching change" involving a friend, but adds that the move was made in the program's best interests.
Mitchell came with McNeill from Texas Tech in 2010.

Good news here. I can't stand it when teams are putting up 40+ points on us on a regular basis.

Last year when the offense was sputtering, everyone was calling for the Offensive Coordinator to be fired. Now this year, everyone wanted Mitchell fired. Let's get to the root of the problem- FIRE MCNEILL!!

Certainly would have beaten Navy and Rajun Cajuns if we had some defense. 10-3 would of been a very good season.

Just what ECU needed. defensively we weren't able to stop anyone all year. It does no good to have the offense that they have if there is no defense.
