Debate in The Wolves Den
Debate in The Wolves Den
There is currently a debate in the NC State section of the Smack Forums about who ECU fans hate more, NCSU or UNC. Just thought I would see what the Pirates really think.
RE: Debate in The Wolves Den
Hate is a strong word for me. I don't hate anyone or wish ill-will on them.
It is neck and neck, but I am going to have to say that I dislike NC State more than UNC. A loss to the Pack stings more than a loss to UNC.
I think the majority of Pirate fans would agree with me. I think because we have played the Wolfpack so many more times than UNC that a deeper rivalry ensued over the years.
RE: Debate in The Wolves Den
That's fair. My sister went to ECU. Her take on it was, "at least State wasn't chicken to play us".
RE: Debate in The Wolves Den
Good question. I think that you have issues that are off the field issues and then you have issues with on the field rivarly.
First, UNC tried without success to block the bid for the ECU medical school and dental school which is something that we resent about those people. That is something that goes beyond sports.
Then you have the NC State series which had the 1987 'riot' game and the 1992 Peach Bowl so there have been more memorable moments with the NC State game.
Both are in state rivals that the Pirates want to beat so I say it is equal but for unique and different reasons.

I heard your dental school was excellent. With all the one-toothed jackwads in pitt county they could really concentrate on that one tooth and get it polished up all purty.

jaccofdummers go back under your rock. ewenc is a farce. Back to the subject....ecwho??
RE: Debate in The Wolves Den
From what I see, ECU hates State much more than UNC. I see ECU grads a lot with UNC plates, caps, shirts, etc. The most traitorous people in North Carolina. :-)
RE: Debate in The Wolves Den
I would have to guess that there is a greater rivalry between ECU and State than there is between ECU and UNC. Not sure that's the same thing as "hate" though.
ECU's fan base is predictably very heavily concentrated in the east. And I would say that the geographic center of State's fan base is significantly further east than is Carolina's. I'd guess that more often than not the Pack and the Pirates are competing for the same kids. That's not because they have similar recruiting strategies (or that they are different from UNC's targets) but because the kids themselves are more likely to view State and ECU as their "home" schools.
RE: Debate in The Wolves Den
Most ECU fans strongly dislike both of these schools for various reasons, majority of those are off the field things. UNC fought tooth and nail not to allow ECU to get a Med school in fear that in would hurt them (I have no clue if it did or not, I would assume not), then the fought extremely hard against us getting a Dental School. State fought just as hard trying to block ECU's Engineer programs.
Athletically I think we have more of a rivalry with State because of what Ken said the majority of ENC are ECU fans but there are State and UNC fans here, but State fans far outnumber UNC fans (other than WalMart fans). State's AD also just fueled the rivalry with her comments after the ECU-State football game. But at least UNC is not scared to plays us, and just not in football either (Lebo has stated he is in talks with Roy about a 2 for 1 basketball series with us (2 at CH 1 in G'ville)).
RE: Debate in The Wolves Den
Another aspect of this, I think is that if you live and work in eastern North Carolina, as so many Pirate fans do, the guy you're likely to run into at church on Sunday or at work on Monday after a game is more apt to be a Pack fan than a Tarheel. That's where a lot of the smack gets tossed around.
RE: Debate in The Wolves Den
Can any Pirate fans here tell us some good stories or experiences of past games in Dowdy-Ficklen versus the ACC teams?
