Not at all. I wouldn't have thought that houston would hang 72 on SMU when they played a few weeks ago.

70 bowls is a meaningless reward in my book. With so many bowls out there that they would allow 5-7 teams to go is not a reward. It is watered down and no longer a real symbol of success.

Would you have guessed SMU would knock off Tulsa? As of 7:13 tonight there are 69 teams eligible for 70 bowl slots. There are five teams who still have a shot. One of them is Rice. If they beat UTEP they're guaranteed a bowl, since C-USA wouldn't have enough teams to meet all its commitments.

There is no way UAB beats UCF. If UCF loses to UAB then they definitely are not fit to play for the CUSA title game. UCF should win by at least 30 points.

If the upset happened I would not be confident going to Tulsa being that Marshall put up 633 yards of offense on our defense. 419 passing and 237 rushing. Tulsa has a decent defense and a powerful offense. I think if we played them we would get clobbered. If we beat Tulsa, then my tune about Ruff as the HC would start to change being that he beat a well rounded team.

WhoooWeeee- 65-59 No exactly a defensive struggle but I'll take it! 8-4 and they never gave up in this one.

You were certainly right about the shootout. But didn't the Pirates have something to play for? Unless I'm mistaken, if UAB wins tomorrow, ECU is in the championship game.

Ecu run game really clicking. Ecu has also made huge defensive plays. O line looks rediculously dominant.

  • lazydawg58 Nov 23, 2012

35-14 in the 2nd! Things are looking up!

  • lazydawg58 Nov 23, 2012

    21-7 beginning of the second!

That's a very good and fair analysis of today's game. We all know it's going to be a shootout -- defense is going to be the key. I wathced last week's game on my computer, but had to listen to Tulane's announcers (which was funny stuff). But what impressed both me and them was the fact of whenever Tulane caught the ball (which was a lot), ECU was right there to make the tackle with very little to no yards after the catch. Plus, in the 2nd half we started to get to the QB for either sacks or hurried throws.

ECU's offense did barely enough to win the game. But, it was the defense that turned TD's into field goals for Tulane. However, we did allow them to get deep with a late 31 yard TD pass. And had our offense not scored a TD on their last possesion -- we would have lost that game.

Marshall's defense sucks -- that's why they have the record they do. So, can ECU's offense score enough and not beat or stop ourself. Can our defense tackle and stop TD's and force field goals. And maybe most importantly -- what kind of coaching and team character will we show when adversity hits (BECAUSE IT WILL !!). That's why I think this game will be a good and true test of the program.

I'm looking forward to watching the game on my TV. I've got my wings marinating and my Crown & Sprite in the frig. Hopefully things will go well -- at least so that my friends don't tear up my house in anger. GO PIRATES !!!

I studied this game in depth from injuries to shared team comparisons to specific match ups. Cannot determine an edge either way. This would be the best win that ecu has had so far because the offense is similar (not talent wise but design wise) to teams that ecu has lost to this season. If ecu wins this game it would be proof of improvement that many ecu fans have been looking for in my opinion. I wish y'all luck.
    Ecu keys to the game:
Prevent big running plays. Marshall has had quite a few in their last games to help boost a team that would prefer to throw.
Defensive stops. Whoever has the most wins this game. Period.
Protect the middle of the field on short yardage throws. Marshall likes to open up the long pass with the short passes in the middle of the field.
I could put turnovers or any of the that holds true for any game up here but we all know that.

Co'mon Man !! I'm not real happy either or enthused about ECU football given the true aspect of our current program. But, let's try to remamin hopeful and thankful for what we've got. I mean, it is Thanksgiving for crying out load. So, we all can be at least optimistic on this special day -- or at least until the programs proves us wrong with the last 2 games. What do you say ??

I agree cooper. This and the bowl game will tell me a lot. I am not so sure that beating Marshall would be considered a great win being that they are 5-6 and I think they lost to Memphis or one of the other CUSA bottom feeders a few weeks ago. The bowl game is what I am curious about. My mind has been made up about the coaching staff and I don't think they will take us anywhere close to what Logan, Skip or Pat Dye did. I just see mediocre football.

However a solid bowl win over a good team and wins over UNC or NCSU next year will change my mind. I don't think it will happen though.

They also have a running back who puts up 150 often enough to be mentioned.

Ecu can score also. We know both teams can score. This game will be decided by who can stop somebody. We can't be sure who that is.

That's correct, the game will be on CBS Sports network (CBSSN) which is on a higher tier than just basic cable. Also a reminder that kickoff is scheduled for 2pm -- not 3:30. Due to the contract, I don't beleive that it can be carried by WITN, nor can the video be shown on the ECU/CUSA All Access computer site -- but the audio (radio broadcast) will be available.

I think this will be a very important game for ECU. It will tell a great deal about the team and coaching staff. Marshall has a more decent record than our other wins and a great deal to play for in that 6th win to become bowl eligible. How ironic would it be that Marshall beat us last year in OT to keep us out of a bowl game. Can ECU take revenge this year ??

I agree that the game will come down to mistakes and possibly who has the ball last. Marshall is ranked #1 in passing (CUSA) and will throw the ball all over the field -- which isn't a good sign for ECU. However , they also have the worst defense in CUSA in allowed scoring and also allowing an average of 252 yards rushing per game. I think it will come down to turnovers, mistakes & crucial penalties, and the difference between TD's and field goals. ECU got lucky last week against Tulane with bad penalties at crucial times and turnovers that limited possesions. However, ECU's defense did force a few field goals instead of given up TD's. I'm not so sure they will be able to get away with that this week.

I see this as a crucial game because -- can we actually play a well-coached, mistake free ball game -- or our we going to find a way to "beat ourself". This game as well as our upcoming bowl game will tell me a great deal of if ECU is now headed in the right direction with the football program.

It is listed as CBS sports here. That is a pay channel and I think that means no witn 7 broadcast on this game. That is the channel that caused all that uproar 2 years ago because they bought the ecu unc game and few people had that tier in their cable package.

  • lazydawg58 Nov 22, 2012

I know the game will be on some network, thus the Friday @ 3:30 kickoff, but I doubt the basic cable were I am for the holiday includes that network. I can get WITN, will they be broadcasting it as well?

Ahmad Bradshaw flunked INTO Marshall as did Mr.Moss. Heck, those are just the talented ones that people have heard of. Every time I see a talented player at a major college not make it through admissions or commit some crime, Marshall is one of the places that I check for their reappearance. Especially if it is a player that we followed for recruiting reasons and determined that he could not make admissions or was likely to be in jail on National Signing Day. No kidding. It is a running joke within regional recruiting circles.

Besides him and Randy Moss, I'm guessing they've never had any other four star recruits. I believe the question they'd have asked him when he left BC is "what position would you like to play, sir?"

  • hovis Nov 21, 2012

Yeah those are the ones that I remember. Okoroha was a four star player. I had heard that they had gotten into some trouble but I guess that has never stopped Marshall from signing or playing anyone.

You have a better memory than I do. Actually, it was one player, a four-star recruit who would be a fifth year senior at Marshall. His name was Okechuckwu Okoroha (easy for you to say). In sympathy, his best friend Dominick LeGrande (two-stars) quit the team and also transferred to Marshall.

They are both listed as safeties on Marshall's roster for this season, and both are number one on the depth chart at marshall.rivals.com.

Ken, maybe you know about this. I seem to remember two troubled but talented defensive players for BC were kicked off of the team. The last that I heard they were suiting up for Marshall but I cannot find them on the depth chart. What gives?

I'd like to think that the possibility of a 9 win season, no matter who the beat or lost to, should be motivation for the Pirates. It's been 12 years since ECU lost as few as 4 games in a season.

This will be a shoot out. It may be that whoever gets the ball last wins. Marshall has something to play for.

    Matchup summary: ECU-7 pt favorite
    Marshall-5-6, (6-1)
    My take:
Much like ECU it is hard to appraise this team as their losses have often come at the hands of good or decent teams. However, getting murdalized by UCF (54-17) should be a good sign for the pirates. Their Houston win was also by a lesser margin. However they also seem to have a somewhat efficient running game to go along with their passing game which has caused problems for ECU against the better teams on their schedules.
Conclusion: Toss up. I would not put any money within a mile of this thing. Best defense will win but how can you correctly predict turnovers or blown coverage?
Here is to hoping that ECU can pull it out. Good luck.
