Old Ruffin likely to remain ECU coach

I don't see ECU releasing Ruffin in the current situation. So if I was a ECU fan here are the things that I would look for from now until next year as signs of improvement from McNeil.
1.) It should be much easier for McNeil to recruit some offensive players on an offense that posts large numbers and is returning their starting QB who showed progression throughout the year. Pair that with open key positions on the offense as well as other positions up for competition it should not be too hard of a sell.
2.) Win the bowl game. Does not matter who it is against. It will be one of the few games on tv at that time, so it will have a much wider viewership than most ECU games. Could help encourage a player outside the usual ECU area look at them a little closer.
3.) Fix the defense. Top to bottom. Tear it apart and glue it back together. Tell every kid that has not performed well this year hat his job is not guaranteed next year and recruit by position by telling recruits that their specific position will be up for grabs. Fire the defensive coordinator.
You guys add whatever else you think that I may have overlooked.

The offense needs to run smoother and we need a new defensive coordinator. If he can take care of those things he will stay. However, I think it will inevitably be Brian Mitchell that sinks the Ruff and the Pirates.
We have been outcoached by even some of the lesser teams. If they had better talent, they would have beaten us. Time will tell, but I don't see Ruff as getting us conference titles, national rankings and big upsets like his predecessors Logan and Holtz did. I think we will just be mediocre at best as long as he is in the helm.

Ruffin is safe for the next season. They did well in their conference and won games. One game away from the title.

I see it pretty much the same way. We have done very well this year, but it is our defense that has stopped us from reaching the next level. I see the D talent level pretty much the same as it always has been. It comes down to coaching and I don't see Brian Mitchell getting it done. The worse thing I see is that there is no possibility to adapt or adjust the defense during the game. When Marshall's 1st string QB Cato went down -- the new guy (freshman) came in and threw it all over us with no answers to stop it for the rest of the game.
I will say our defense has improved greatly with the run defense. Just look at all the national running backs (Latimore, Benard and other CUSA backs) that we held them far below their average rushing. But then again, those same backs TORCHED us in passing yards. Any decent Passing QB can and will pick us apart. We just need some good defensive backs along with some good coaching of how to disrupt the QB -- while still stopping the run.
But yes, Ruff isn't going anywhere anytime soon. With what I've seen this year in improvement and the talent we have coming back -- it might not be all that bad. Will be extremely interesting to see if Holland will put Ruff in the same situation Logan was put in -- if you want to keep your job, then fire the D Coord. Logan said that when he refused to fire (Tim Rose) his D Coord.-- he knew it was going to be his own end at ECU.

I hope that Ruff will get rid of him before, so that it doesn't come down to that. I could never understand why Logan wouldn't get rid of Rose.
The special teams and running backs coach left last year for Leach and since then our running game and special teams got better with the hiring of Kirk Doll. It was night and day from last year. If we continue to flounder without Mitchell then that is all Ruff. We need a change at DC or it will affect our play in the BE.

How will the new conference affect ECU recruiting?
hovis Nov 27, 7:51 p.m.
Massively if the staff are good enough at recruiting to take advantage. Selling the Big East just in name is much easier than CUSA. Plus do not forget that you will begin selling this now and whatever teams may leave they will not have done this yet. They will se a BE team in a BCS bowl this year. Now before somebody starts suggesting national championships here I am not talking about rivaling Unc or State right now or even getting close. But you could catch up to Duke and Wake regionally. If some number of the bigger football teams stay even for a couple years it will spread your recruiting area to some extent.
